Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Nicolas.
Hi Brandon, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My clothing brand was originally just an afterthought of my never ending love for expressing myself in arts and fashion. Dating back to when I was even in grade school, I would have visions of what I clothes I liked to wear, and what outfit combos I liked to put together. Through that, it started to turn to me envisioning clothes beyond what I knew. I started to play around with spray painting and custom cutting and sewing garments to feed my passion. I also surrounded myself with like-minded people that also found an appeal towards fashion and it helped me realize that I really want to make clothes for other people besides myself as well. I knew nothing of how to start a brand, or what steps I should be taking to get to the point where I want to be at. I researched many hours day and night about business, advertising, marketing, and modernity and it helped me get to the point where I am today. The brand was built by my drive and passion for fashion, and it is what gets me excited to do what I’m doing.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has most certainly not been a smooth road. Any business takes risks to many degrees, but to me it was always worth it. Some of my struggles include the hefty finances, the time management, and the manufacturing miscommunications. In order to make money, you need to be willing to spend it. Making clothes is not cheap, especially clothes that are custom made. There are no cutting corners when it comes to trying to make my clothes with the highest quality fabrics and garments but that comes at a cost. As a part time student and a part time restaurant server, my schedule is already pretty tight, so trying to maintain a good work/life balance was a hard struggle for me. I am learning to time manage and be able to focus on everything I need to do on a day by day basis. Finally, inquiring overseas for clothes can be very difficult. The time zone differences or the language barriers make communication a lot worse. Also, not being able to see the products I make in production and only being able to see the final product is also hard because it requires a lot of patience in the clothes making stage.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
My clothing brand name is Musubi Muso. My goal with my brand is to blend modernized streetwear and fashionable volleyball athleisure. What sets me apart from the rest are my unorthodox designs and blurred lines between fashion and athletics. When it comes to my brand, I’m most proud of my clothes and designs. Creating and seeing the final products, making my visions come to life. That is a feeling of utmost pride and joy that is like no other. I want my audience to know that I love hearing feedback, the customers are what make my visions reality. I just had my first clothing drop with my “Journeyer Denim jacket”, and it comes out on December 16th so stay tuned!
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I see my brand having a loyal customer base and seeing people rock my pieces on the street. In 5-10 years, I will hold pop ups, or have community events where like-minded individuals can also meet each other and express themselves freely.
