Today we’d like to introduce you to Brianna Mitchell.
Brianna, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started my professional journey working in social services in Alameda County, California. While the work was meaningful, I knew deep down that I wanted more , more growth, more ownership, and more control over the life I was building for myself and my children.
At a pivotal moment, I made a bold decision. I packed up my two kids, drove to Texas with $20,000, and told myself this would be the place where I planted my roots and didn’t look back. I didn’t come with a safety net. Outside of my mom, Tamiko, my stepmom Tutu, and our extended family, I realized I had been leaning on support instead of fully stepping into my own independence. I wanted real change , and I knew I had to become that change.
Once in Texas, I began my entrepreneurial journey and found my way into the tax and financial services world. What started as a career move quickly became a passion. I discovered that I had a natural ability to fix problems, create structure, and help people navigate situations that felt overwhelming. I had spent years fixing everything around me, and one day it clicked, it was time to fix myself too.
That realization pushed me to stop hiding my story and instead use it as a tool. I chose to pull my experiences from under the rock I had been hiding them beneath and turn them into purpose. That decision ultimately led me to found New Ways Youth Empowerment Center, a nonprofit built on the belief that access, guidance, and opportunity can change the entire trajectory of a young person’s life.
Today, everything I build in business and in community work is rooted in that same commitment: creating new ways forward for others by standing fully in my own story.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The biggest challenge I faced was distance. Leaving behind my friends and family was not easy, and there were moments where the loneliness hit hard. But in that isolation, I discovered something unexpected, I actually excel when I’m alone. The quiet forced me to hear myself clearly, without outside noise or influence.
What I once thought was drowning me was really rinsing me thoroughly. It stripped away distractions, habits, and mindsets that no longer served me and prepared me for what was ahead. That season taught me self-awareness. I began to recognize that I could be short-tempered and reactive at times, especially when things felt out of control.
Instead of ignoring that, I leaned into the lesson. I realized I wasn’t angry, I was frustrated because I felt stuck. I wanted the next level, but I wasn’t ready for it yet. Bigger opportunities come with bigger problems, and if I couldn’t manage small moments, like a dishwasher flooding the floor mid-cycle, I wasn’t prepared to manage the weight of growth.
Through that awareness, I learned how to cope, pause, and respond instead of react. I stopped moving off emotion and started executing every plan and decision with intention. That shift changed everything in business, in leadership, and in my personal growth.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Over the next 5–10 years, I see the tax and financial services industry continuing to shift toward technology driven, year round support rather than seasonal, transactional services. Automation and AI will handle more basic filings, which means the true value of tax professionals will move toward strategy, compliance, and advisory services.
As tax laws become more complex and enforcement becomes more precise, there will be a growing demand for knowledgeable professionals who understand both the technical side of taxation and its real life impact on individuals and businesses. Clients will expect more education, transparency, and proactive planning not just a refund number.
Remote work and virtual firms will also continue to expand, allowing tax and financial services to reach people across state lines while increasing access to employment opportunities. At the same time, regulatory standards will rise, creating a clear divide between compliant, credentialed firms and short term, high risk operators.
Overall, the industry is moving toward accountability, education, and long term financial guidance. Firms that can adapt, stay informed, and genuinely serve their clients beyond tax season will be the ones that lead the future of this space.
