Hidden Gems: Meet Carlos Lugo of Smokelife BBQ & Tacos

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carlos Lugo.

Hi Carlos, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My journey began after a loss in 2017 and cooking became a form of healing. I started selling BBQ plates in a lot in Seagoville Tx. Slowly began to build clientele. 2018 I started to book caterings for private events and small businesses while working a full time job. 2020 my family and I moved to Kemp Tx and a year later took a leap of faith, quit my job and started doing the food business full time. Myself along with my wife we worked hard booking more caterings and events. I finally found a spot at a gas station where they let me set up outside with my canopy and griddle. In 2024 we finally purchased our food truck and found different places to set up. We have now been at a permanent location in downtown Kemp Tx, across city hall since April 2025. This journey this far has been only by the help and grace of God, family and friends. We are still growing and waiting to see what else is in store for my family and I.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not always been smooth. With just my wife and I working, we have burned out, have had losses. When it’s rained and being stuck under a canpoy praying someone would show up, that right can make you wonder if you’re doing the right thing.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We have our own twist of Texas BBQ. It’s a hint traditional with a hint of Mexican flavors.
My homemade BBQ sauce is something I am very proud of. We have had people return just for that alone.
Aside of serving food, I want people to feel the love and passion behind it.

We offer caterings, event services and on a normal day, I like to sit and talk to my customers to get to know them and make them feel welcome.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
We enjoy getting with other small businesses to share with our community. Networking has helped connect with farms, bakers and more to buy different product and keep our ingredients as local as possible. Spreading the word is a huge way to show support.
