Today we’d like to introduce you to Carol Espejo, MD.
Hi Carol, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
As a specialist, I was used to treating specific medical conditions with Botox — chronic migraines, muscle spasticity, and other conditions where precision mattered as much as clinical judgment.
It started with a simple request from a friend. She was already receiving Botox for chronic migraines and asked, half-jokingly, if she could use the “leftover” units on her wrinkles. That single injection — the first I ever gave for aesthetic purposes — opened a door I didn’t expect to walk through.
Over the years that followed, I refined my technique : practicing on family and friends while working full-time as a non-surgical spine specialist. What began as curiosity grew into much more than that. I pursued advanced training in skin aesthetics and an evidence-based hair restoration fellowship, both abroad and in the U.S.
As my interests evolved, so did my understanding of aesthetic and regenerative medicine. I became increasingly drawn not simply to changing how someone looks, but to the science of restoration and regeneration—supporting the health and quality of skin, hair, joints, and underlying tissues.
In 2022, I moved to Texas for what would ultimately become my last position as a spine specialist. By 2023, I was ready to pursue a dream: building my own specialty practice.
A year later, I was able to move into my current location. — where I now serve patients with joint and musculoskeletal conditions, alongside those facing alopecia, hair thinning, and concerns around skin health and rejuvenation. It’s the same commitment to precision and evidence-based care that defined my medical training, applied to a practice built entirely around how people want to look — and feel.
For me, these areas are not as different as they may seem. Whether I am treating pain, restoring hair, improving skin quality, or using regenerative medicine to support healthier tissue, the philosophy is the same: understand the individual, respect the underlying anatomy and biology, and use evidence-based medicine with precision and purpose.
My goal is not to make people look like someone else. It is to help them look and feel like the best, healthiest version of themselves—through thoughtful, personalized treatments that enhance, restore, and regenerate rather than simply alter.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The journey hasn’t been quite what I expected—but I wouldn’t change a thing.
Illinois is still our home base, where my husband continues to work full-time. To pursue this path, I had to leave the hometown I had known for years and a job I had held for fifteen years, moving to Texas to join a spine practice. Unfortunately—or perhaps fortuitously, depending on how you look at it—that clinic closed not long after I arrived.
Suddenly, I was faced with a choice: join another practice or finally build one of my own.
I chose to build.
That meant starting from nothing—a new state, a new location, a new field, and an entirely new business. I was an n of 1: no team, no infrastructure, no established playbook. Just me, figuring it out one step at a time.
I started in a single, small room and slowly began building something of my own. Eventually, through perseverance, patience, and a lot of faith, I was blessed to grow into my current location.
The challenges were the challenges of any new business owner—strategic, financial, logistical, and administrative—while simultaneously being the sole clinical provider. There were plenty of growing pains and more than a few moments when I wondered if I had taken on too much.
The struggles were sometimes discouraging but I had to dig deep to strengthen my resolve. Every challenge taught me something, every setback forced me to adapt, and every small victory reminded me why I started.
Today, I’m still building. And I’m building with intention.
Ultimately, what drives me is the desire to create a clinic that puts the best interests of my patients first—a place where medical expertise, aesthetic medicine, regenerative approaches, and genuine human connection come together.
I couldn’t have done this without the support of my family and friends. And through every uncertain step, my faith has remained the foundation that keeps me moving forward.
This clinic may have started with just one person in one small room.
But it was never just about building a business.
It was about building something I could believe in.
We’ve been impressed with Ederra Zara, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Ederra Zara is a medical, regenerative, and aesthetic clinic—where science, restoration, and beauty come together.
We care for individuals experiencing joint and musculoskeletal conditions, chronic excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), chronic migraines, and other neuromuscular concerns. On the aesthetic side, we specialize in non-surgical facial and body rejuvenation and regeneration, as well as comprehensive approaches to hair health, hair restoration, and rejuvenation.
What connects all of these areas is our belief in restoration rather than alteration. We are passionate about providing regenerative and aesthetic solutions that are thoughtful, effective, and transformative—designed to enhance, not change, the features that make each individual unique.
Our philosophy is simple: honor each person’s unique beauty, enhance their confidence, and always lead with integrity and innovation.
At Ederra Zara, we believe there is no one-size-fits-all approach to medicine or aesthetics. Every patient has different goals, needs, anatomy, circumstances, and budgets. That is why we take the time to develop customized treatment plans that are aligned with what matters most to each individual.
We believe in a non-pressured, non-judgmental, and compassionate environment. Our role is not to convince someone that they need a treatment. It is to listen, educate, provide honest recommendations, and help each patient make an informed decision that feels right for them.
There is no shortage of businesses that want to succeed. We are no different. But at Ederra Zara, we believe something very simple:
If we do right by the patient, everything else will follow.
Every person who walks through our doors can be assured that their care is grounded in years of advanced medical training, clinical experience, continuous education, and a commitment to safety.
Safety is never negotiable.
We are equally uncompromising about the products and technologies we offer. The products we carry are carefully selected for their authenticity, quality, effectiveness, and scientific support. We believe our patients deserve nothing less.
The name Ederra Zara means “you are beautiful.”
And that meaning is at the heart of everything we do.
We believe beauty does not need to be created—it is already there. Sometimes it simply needs to be revealed, restored, or given the opportunity to shine.
Our goal is not to make you look like someone else.
It is to help you see—and feel—the beauty that is uniquely yours. Because when you look good, you feel good.
