Hi Christine, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My story started with burnout from working in academics as an Associate Professor for over a decade and being a healthcare professional (I am a Physician Assistant). I stepped away from my career to take a much needed mental health break and to review my calling in life. It was during this much needed downtime that my husband suggested I meld my two passions, science & art, through candle making. I was sold and Lilyfield Candles was born that day.
Lilyfield Candles mission is to inspire others to create and live a Life Lived Well. This is why each candle and wax melt are accompanied by a QR code with an inspirational video that reflects the meaning behind its name. Lilyfield Candles are more than candles made from the best products, eco-friendly, soy based, Leaping Bunny certified ingredients and non-toxic fragrances. Lilyfield Candles are crafted with hope, inspiration, and motivation. Each small-batch, hand-poured candle is designed to illuminate one’s journey in life toward creating a Life Lived Well.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Nothing in life is easy and this for sure hasn’t been a smooth road. However, I feel no matter what you do in life, you will always encounter a challenge. The end results will depend on how you overcame these obstacles. You have to pause and ask yourself: Did you learn from these challenge? Did you keep going? Did you get a mentor and advice from others who went before you? Specifically, one struggle I encountered was spending too much time on packaging my products once I got a sale. It was taking me around 15 to 20 minutes sometimes to wrap, package, weigh, tape and finally print the shipping label! Way too much time for just one product to ship! I learned quickly that this wasn’t going to work. Even though I loved my initial packaging, I knew I had to improve this system to survive. My new packaging, which I think is even nicer (very slick and modern) I cut the packaging process by 80% !
I want to pause here and point out this is a learning opportunity right here for others….take it from me, you can’t do or know everything. You have to build a team to support you and you have to be humble enough to listen. I am great at the big picture, marketing, creating new products, and social media but my strengths do not lie in the everyday processes of the business like packaging, shipping and business operations. Therefore, I count my blessings that my husband has these strong business acumens to balance out my skill sets. Not to mention, my sons have also greatly helped in creating labels for me and helping me with developing a social media presence. It truly is a family business!

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Great question! You need to look for a mentor and make connections. No one will do this for you and if you don’t do it, no one will know about your product. It could be the most amazing thing that you created, but if you don’t connect to others and find a “coach” or mentor to help you, it won’t go anywhere. Also, get used to being turned down, have your time wasted and going to networking meetings that may not be helpful. You have to stay-the-course until you find “your people” to help you reach your goals and ambition. The easiest way to network and find a mentor is to talk to people! Talk to your friends, your friend’s friends, go on social media, join FB groups, Instagram etc. and let people know what you need. The universe will send them to you but you need to put it out there first. DON”T be shy! You’re business depends on it:-)
