Hidden Gems: Meet Craig Meek of Emergency Leadership Institute

Today we’d like to introduce you to Craig Meek.

Hi Craig, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Craig Meek’s story:

Dr. Meek has been an Emergency Medicine physician for over 20 years. He is a past president of the Texas College of Emergency Physicians and is an oral board examiner for the American Board of Emergency Medicine. He has lectured at 21 different Emergency Medicine Residency training programs.

Craig has been a faculty member of the Naveen Jindal School of Management at University of Texas Dallas where he taught Negotiation and Conflict Resolution to physicians seeking their Masters in Business.

Dr. Meek is also a certified Executive Coach. He has served as an Executive Coach and incorporates this education and management style into all of his businesses.

He has been an entrepreneur since he was 13 years old, starting his first lawn business with his older brother. He has launched many businesses including a medical software company named Pulsara, but is most proud of his new business ELI (or the Emergency Leadership Institute).

ELI has been in Craig’s mind from an incident that happened to him when he was 17 years old. While throwing a football with his best friend in his front yard, a car crashed into a telephone pole 10 feet away traveling 50 MPH. The pole cracked and lines started to fall. The car was smoking and the girl who was driving was unconscious and not breathing well. Craig yelled for his friend to go inside and call 911, then headed to the driver side door. The lady looked like she might have a broken neck. She wasn’t breathing right as just a few bloody bubbles came out of her nose from when she had hit the steering wheel hard. “Was the car going to catch on fire? Were the power lines coming down? Should I try to move her? Is her neck broken?” were all thoughts in his mine. He opened the car door and stood there slowly watching her die. It feels like a long time between when you call for EMS and then they finally arrive in those type of situations.

ELI was born on that day in his 17 year old brain. Not again! People should all know what to do to help each other! They need to know how to help their families and friends.

ELI is a leadership, team building boot camp that is very unique. The participants receive skills and training to reach their personal and professional goals. Their team gets to practice their new leadership and emergency skills at the camp. ELI teaches them to evaluate and treat common medical emergencies as they treat patients on the course. From snake bites to delivering babies, ELI gives them the knowledge and the tools to treat most emergencies. The participants can receive a Go-Bag at the end of the course. It contains many tools as well as common antibiotics and other medicines that normally would have to be obtained at an ER or a doctor’s office. They are given algorithms and training to have confidence and “Become Fearless” when facing any emergency situation.

Diana Jordan’s story:

Ms. Jordan’s story is one of determination, relentless positivity, faith and inspiration. Diana is Vice President of ELI and a working Nurse Practitioner. She is a self made woman and a re-made woman. You will understand that comment when you see her.

She is literally an inspiration everywhere she goes. Diana is a survivor of a domestic violence attack. While getting a divorce from her husband 6 years ago she was attacked in a very nice strip mall in Longview Texas. She had a restraining order against her estranged husband but it did not stop him. He beat her head into a steering wheel of a car and then shot her in her left hip. The bullet went through her femoral artery and shattered her left femoral head. He then shot himself in the chest and fell on her body. His arms weight compressed her bleeding artery. She was pulseless when paramedics arrived at the scene. She had 5 separate cardiac arrests with CPR each time in her subsequent hospitalization. That’s right! She died 5 times. Tracheostomy, bilateral chest tubes, dialysis catheter placement, colon removal, leg amputation were a few of her 30 surgeries.

She has a smile that permeates any negativity. Diana snow skis, swims, hikes, and is a top 10 Crossfit athlete in her category. She will be competing in the Adaptive Crossfit Games this year. She sees patients as a nurse practitioner and inspires them to get off their butt and get to work! She is excited to help people change and reach new levels as she works with them in ELI.

It is well known that once you meet Diana Jordan, you will never be the same!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
ELI is a leadership/team building bootcamp. Participants will study leadership, communication, negotiation, change management skills. The participants leave with a personal development plan to achieve their life goals. They will be taught how to engage in all emergency situations. ELI will teach them to “Become Fearless”. It is life-changing.

The participants can obtain a G0-Bag with prescription medications and tools for most emergencies. G0-Bags are available to the public as well.

After completing the course many participants can continue to work on their growth and life goal plan by working with one of our ELI Executive Coaches. This allows the individual to continue to grow and stay on course.

ELI also offers concierge medicine with our ELI MYDOC service to those who want a doctor on speed dial for their medical needs.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
At ELI we understand that nothing in life worthwhile is obtained as an individual. Both of us were shaped and helped by numerous friends, family members and colleagues. The list is long and growing every day.
