Hidden Gems: Meet Dr. Damien Dauphinee of Complete Foot and Ankle Care

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Damien Dauphinee.

Hi Dr. Dauphinee, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I graduated with a degree in Pre-Professional Studies from the University of Notre Dame in 1992. Graduated with honors from the Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine in 1996 (now a component of the Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science in North Chicago). Completed residency training in reconstructive foot and ankle surgery at Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, CA and DePaul Health Center in Bridgeton, MO in 1999. I was recruited to start my practice in Lewisville, TX by the Medical Center of Lewisville and helped develop their out-patient wound care and hyperbaric medicine program. I grew my practice quickly over the next several years and owned part of a local surgery center. In 2005, I helped develop a physician-owned hospital and sold my ownership interest in the surgery center. As a part of that physician-owned hospital, I developed a Center for Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medicine as an out-patient department of the hospital and served as The Medical Director of Limb Preservation from 2006 until 2020. In 2018, I became part owner in a hospital management company managing two local hospitals and in 2020 began development of a Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine program for the hospital in Argyle, TX. My private practice has gone through several changes in partners and associates over the years but has remained a fixture in the medical community in Denton, TX for 23 years.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The global pandemic over the last two years has been tough on everyone in health care and beyond. Our practice, like many others, has struggled to remain intact but we are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My partner Dr. Raafae Hussain and I practice reconstructive foot and ankle surgery and like the name of the practice says we provide the full gamut of care for foot and ankle problems. I have sub-specialized in peripheral nerve surgery of the lower extremity and limb preservation particularly focusing on preventing amputations in diabetic patients. Both of these aspects of podiatric medicine and surgery are tremendously rewarding by providing opportunities to save limbs or help eliminate or improve chronic nerve pain.

My partner and I created a podcast called ThePODdoctors with Dr. Dauphinee and Dr. Hussain which is becoming quite popular and can be found on Spotify, Apple, and YouTube platforms, as well as many others. We have 40 episodes completed and they include topics on the full breadth of podiatric foot and ankle surgery care from bunion and hammertoe surgery to complex Charcot reconstruction using Ilizarov ringed external fixators to save limbs and save lives.

I wrote a Kindle book that was published two years ago on limb salvage called Saving Limbs, Saving Lives: Advanced Treatments to Prevent Amputations in Diabetic Populations.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
My wife and I moved to a high-rise apartment in the Harwood district in downtown Dallas in 2019 because we loved the easy access to our favorite restaurants and to have things within walking distance. Unfortunately, the pandemic hit soon after and many of our favorite places struggled, and some closed for good. What I love about Texas and the metroplex, in general, is that people found a way to make it through the storm and we are seeing downtown come alive once again. We live in Irving now but still love to visit our favorites in Dallas.
