Hidden Gems: Meet Diane Thompson Mitchell of Mitchell Thompson Interiors

Today we’d like to introduce you to Diane Thompson Mitchell.

Hi Diane, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
We are a husband and wife team: Roy Mitchell and Diane Thompson Mitchell. Here’s our story. We were each working in the design industry at the time we met about 15 years ago. We immediately recognized that we shared a similar approach to our clients and service levels, but had very different strengths. Both of us have exquisite taste, ensure quality of products and services we employ, and work through every detail to ensure clients’ satisfaction. Individually, Roy is adept at client onboarding, vendor curation, creative problem solving, and coaching clients through the various stages of projects. Diane’s strengths lie in cohesive design planning, organization, project management, and business practices.
Leveraging these strengths in each other is the foundation of the well rounded approach and success of our business. We (the business) grew rapidly and we expanded to a showroom space in Plano in 2018. We began hosting monthly networking and client appreciation “happy hours”. We attended networking events throughout the city, developing trusted vendors and collaborators along the way. We appeared on podcasts. Our network of influence was never more apparent than when the pandemic hit in 2020. We received calls from far and wide to help with projects of all sizes during that time. So. Much. Business!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
We are fortunate to have designed for clients who truly appreciate the value of developing a unique and beautiful vision for their home, a realistic budget, and an accurate project timeline upfront. With those three elements in place, a successful project outcome is all but guaranteed. Any struggles come in the way of circumstances that must be overcome. For instance, everyone had to grow their patience during the pandemic, when demand exceeded supply like never before. Lead times were LONG, and transportation was limited greatly. The tariff environment we are in now is creating shifts. Yet, we have promoted and aligned ourselves with american made furnishings where possible and local artisans from the beginning. One of our beloved USA furnishings manufacturers actually leaned in during the pandemic and has been expanding their workforce and capacity ever since. We use them extensively in our designs.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are the creative team driving residential design projects. When you hire us, you are hiring a network of vetted, proven, customer driven vendors and service providers who meet our quality standards. We are known for our approach of designing uniquely for each client. We listen and garner nuggets of personal needs and preference to ensure our client’s satisfaction. For instance, one client loved English design. So we had 4 reading chair lumbar pillows embroidered with the names of 4 English poets. We are skilled in all styles of design, have traveled N America and Europe, are educated in many facets of design including historic periods /antiques, biofilic design, and design psychology for well-being. We find our joy in our clients faces when they are elated in their transformed homes. We have many repeat clients and clients who have employed us to design their vacation/second homes in other states.

We offer a design coaching service that is unique. This is the heart of developing a project. In this service, we walk a client through reflections of what “home” means to them, discuss beliefs they hold about “home”, discover what inspires them, and work to develop a design plan that aligns their home with their needs, aesthetic, and authentic self.

For full service interior design, we start with the coaching model to create the VISION for the project. Then, we procure all the furnishings, art, objects, and services necessary to execute the vision.

If a client has completed the coaching service, then extends to full service design, we credit back the cost of the coaching service toward product or service purchases.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
We are quite adventurous. We love to travel, to sail the east coast, to hike, ski, and fly fish in the mountains, and golf anywhere!
