Today we’d like to introduce you to Ghamar Waldon.
Ghamar, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My name is Ghamar “GeeGee” Waldon, and I’m a Master Barber out of Dallas, TX. After I graduated from Skyline High School in 2008, I joined the Army and went to Prairie View A&M from 2009 until 2011. Decided to come back to Dallas and finish my degree in Mortuary Science at the Dallas Institute of Funeral Services. Yes, I work with the dead hence the name Fresh Til Death Cutz. At the same time getting my Barber License from Dallas Blends Barber College in Pleasant Grove. I started Fresh Til Death Cutz independently in 2019. After working in a suite at a barbershop in Garland, I went and got my own private suite in Mesquite, TX, by Town East Mall. Late 2021 til the summer of 2022 I was a Barber Instructor for a year at Action Barber &Styling College in Garland. After successfully opening a business during a pandemic with no PPP loans or financial assistance, I decided to start a French Bulldog Business with my wife Kalita Waldon called G & K Frenchies in Dallas, TX.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has not been easy. Opening a business during a pandemic and out of my own pocket was hard. It was times when I didn’t think I chose the right decision to open my own shop, but I look back now and don’t regret betting on myself. I had a lot of doubt coming from people who I thought supported me and still made it happen. My ambition and dedication got me here Even now, it’s still a struggle at times trying to balance a business and personal responsibilities. I would say my biggest struggle was trying to finance everything on my own.
