Hidden Gems: Meet Gil Flores of CrossFit Heat

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gil Flores.

Hi Gil, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started as a member of CrossFit Heat about years ago. During COVID, the owners allowed members to come to the gym while classes were closed to get their workouts done on their own. Unfortunately, several gyms around the area started closing. I decided to invest in the gym and became a part-owner on April 1, 2021. My goal was to upgrade the property and make the business a place people would want to visit in downtown. The first step was cleaning up the outside (i.e., parking lot, patio area, fences) to improve the curb appeal. Then, I worked with Downtown Dallas, Inc. to clean the sidewalks from trash and helping move the homeless to shelters. Over the last several months, we have turned the gym into a place that is inviting to downtown visitors.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Although I’d like to say that it was a smooth road, there have been a few bumps. One main issue is the homeless and related issues. Aside from the homeless who were used to defecating and urinating on the sidewalk around our business property, there was the issue of trash. Several groups and individuals feel as though they help the homeless by providing meals that are packaged. Unfortunately, the food that is not eaten and the packaging from the food that is eaten becomes trash that ends up on our property.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
CrossFit Heat is your not-so-typical dirty, sweaty, hard-working CrossFit gym in middle of downtown Dallas. Our coaches are knowledgeable, experienced, humble, down-to-earth people dedicated to help you learn and improve while doing CrossFit.

CrossFit is a strength and conditioning fitness program focused on constantly varied functional movements. It is fun, challenging, and extremely effective. It is for people who want to live healthier lives. We train people just like you – parents, teachers, teens, seniors, athletes, military, law enforcement, and people who are trying a fitness program for the first time ever. CrossFit Heat is for everyone.

Our workouts will improve all aspects of your fitness including strength, endurance, stamina, agility, balance, speed, power, flexibility, coordination, and accuracy. They will also improve your life outside the gym, which we believe is the most important part.

One thing that sets our gym apart from others is the family atmosphere and comradery. We work with the Dallas Police Department and host the annual Dallas Five Throwdown, a CrossFit competition that benefits families of fallen officers and was started to remember the 5 officers killed in downtown Dallas on July 6, 2017.

We know that CrossFit can seem intimidating, so we offer free 2-week trials for people who want to give it a try. We also offer discounts for first responders, teachers, and students.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
Dallas is a wonderful vibrant city. It is a diverse community with exciting things to do and see. One thing our classes often do after the free Saturday morning 9:00 am classes is walk to a local restaurant and enjoy brunch. This can be at the Farmer’s Market, Deep Ellum, or AT&T Discovery Center.

I think one thing I like least about Dallas it our less-than-ideal light rail. As we are just south of City Hall, there are no rail stops near us.

Pricing:

  • $135 a month for unlimited classes
  • $100 for first responders, teachers, and students
