Hidden Gems: Meet Heather Keggins-Lewis of Humble Beginnings Counseling and Consultation Services

Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Keggins-Lewis.

Hi Heather, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
From childhood, I’ve had a desire to help others so I believed that I was supposed to be a nurse. When I discovered that nursing was not for me, I began to work in the social services field. I did not understand that there was a deeper desire in my heart for this type of work. In 2017, after losing my job, I decided to register for graduate school. I knew that school would be a new challenge for me so I prepared my mind and heart to apply. I was told about Texas Wesleyan, (one of the best academic choices I’d made). I began the application, but had not completed it. I guess it was in God’s plan because the next day, the admissions advisor called and asked if I was having any problems with completing the application. I explained that I hadn’t taken the GRE, nor had I registered to take it. The advisor explained that maybe I should give it a try, without the test. She later stated that I’d be interviewed by faculty for the program and I was. In 2019, while in graduate school, I decided that I wanted to start my own business. I began to picture it in detail – the colors, design and even the location. At the time I had just relocated but I still had connections to my colleagues, classmates and professors. So when I graduated in 2020, my mind was already set on what I wanted to do.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I wish I could say that I hadn’t had any and it be true, but there have many challenges that I have faced along the way. Relocating created distance between myself and my friends, colleagues and put added strain on my marriage. My children had to leave their childhood friends behind. We had to adjust to a completely new lifestyle that was foreign to us. Following this, my husband and I divorced. My children started acting out as a result and my world just seemed like it was upside down. After I started to somewhat gain stability, I soon after learned that I was diagnosed with breast cancer. So yes. There have been many tough moments.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Humble Beginnings (HBCCS) offers mental health services to individuals, couples, families and small groups. We specialize in meeting our clients and potential clients where they are.
HBCCS is a minority owned, Black owned and female owned business which we believe is a representation of many who have need of mental health treatment and desire to have a clinician who represents some aspect of them. Through these things, HBCCS offers a more personalized and protected experience for clients.
Our brand name represents consideration for those who may be starting their mental wellness journey from a modest starting point. It is also a representation of my own start, growing up in a small community with very little. We may not have had a lot of things, but we did have lots of love and respect.

How do you think about luck?
I have faced many challenges along the way of establishing my practice- many of them, personal. But I would say that I have been truly blessed in the gift that God has granted me. The challenges and victories have made Humble Beginnings what it is. We wouldn’t be able to enjoy the sunshine without the rain. So I’m thankful for the challenges, equally as much as the successes . I do not take my responsibility lightly. I believe that God has granted me with this gift to better serve Him and to be an example to others who loose hope. So I do not believe in luck. I believe that all things happen by design and devine orchestration of The Almighty God. He is the giver of life, health and strength. So none of it is possible without Him.
