Hidden Gems: Meet Janel Cassorla of She Supply

Today we’d like to introduce you to Janel Cassorla.

Hi Janel , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
She Supply was founded with a clear and powerful goal. We wanted to restoring dignity and ensuring cleanliness for women and girls in need by providing free menstrual products. Driven by a mission to fight period poverty, the organization supplies essential hygiene items to those facing financial, housing, or crisis-related, challenges. The organization was founded in 2016 by two women who watched a video on period poverty. The video moved them and shortly after they founded She Supply and vowed to make a difference in North Texas by supporting the community and fighting the effects of period poverty.

Today, She Supply continues to grow its impact, raising awareness, advocating, and has provided over two millions products in North Texas. We are small, but mighty board made up of working and one retired women who donate their personal time to help other women and girls in need.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As a passionate, volunteer-led working board, we balance not only professional, but personal lives with our dedication to She Supply. We operate from a storage unit due to a limited budget. One day we would love to own a small space with an office and storage. While this poses capacity and marketing challenges, we rely on community connections to make our mission possible and continue to seek passionate partners to join us.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about She Supply ?
She Supply is a Flower Mound, Texas-based, all-volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to eradicating “period poverty” by providing menstrual products, new underwear, and bras to women and girls in need across North Texas. Founded in 2016 by Kathy Meyer and Shari Mayes, the organization specializes in restoring dignity and cleanliness to those in homeless shelters, food pantries, and domestic violence services, partnering with over 15 local organizations to ensure these essential, yet often unaffordable, products are available. What sets She Supply apart is their hyper-local, “unapologetically female” approach, focused on serving their specific community with “grace without judgment” while addressing the harsh reality that these necessities cannot be bought with food stamps. They are most proud of breaking the stigma surrounding menstruation, having distributed over 2 million free products to date, with a $25 donation covering a year’s supply for one person. Readers should know that She Supply works to empower women and girls to continue working and attending school, encouraging community involvement through product drives and donations to ensure no one has to choose between food and feminine hygiene.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
She Supply defines success as sustained growth over the past decade. Demonstration by expanding our reach, increasing access to mental products. For us success means reaching more communities, partnering with more organizations, and consistently providing more products to women and girls in need. Also seeing more impact, awareness, and long-term change surrounding period poverty.
