Hidden Gems: Meet Jason STIER of Veteran Community Mortgage-Powered by Waterstone Mortgage

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason STIER.

Hi Jason, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My story starts with a deep respect for service — not just the kind that comes with a uniform, but the kind rooted in showing up for people when it counts. I didn’t wear the uniform myself, but I’ve always felt called to serve those who do. That calling eventually led me into the mortgage world, where I quickly realized how overlooked and misunderstood the VA loan benefit really was.
Now, let me be real with you: early on, I was just like most loan officers — chasing deals, learning the ropes, and figuring out what kind of business I wanted to build. But the more I worked with Veterans and military families, the more I saw how many of them were being told no for all the wrong reasons. Bad advice, myths about VA loans, lenders who didn’t know the guidelines — it lit a fire in me.
So I stopped trying to be all things to all people and went all in on becoming the guy for VA loans. I started Veteran Community Mortgage with one mission: to serve those who’ve served us, by making sure they understand and get the most out of their hard-earned benefits.
It’s not just about loans — it’s about advocacy, education, and trust. I take pride in breaking things down in plain English, cutting through the nonsense, and helping Veterans feel empowered to buy a home with confidence.
Fast forward to today, I’ve helped thousands of Veterans and active-duty families across the country, and I still get fired up every day knowing that I’m part of their homeownership journey. It’s a privilege — and one I don’t take lightly.
That’s the heart of the story: I found my purpose in serving those who’ve served.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
When I first started, I was just another loan officer in a crowded industry. I didn’t have a name, a niche, or a clear direction. I was hustling, saying yes to everything, and learning some lessons the hard way. The mortgage business can chew you up and spit you out if you don’t find your footing fast.
But the biggest struggle? Finding the courage to go all-in on serving Veterans. See, there were folks who told me I was crazy to niche down — that focusing only on VA loans was “limiting.” They said there wasn’t enough business, that it was too complicated, that I should stick to the easy stuff. But I saw the opposite: a wide-open gap where Veterans were being underserved and misunderstood.
Another challenge was battling all the misinformation out there. I can’t tell you how many times I heard “You can’t do that with a VA loan” — when the guidelines said otherwise. It was frustrating watching good people get turned away because someone didn’t take the time to learn the rules.
Then there’s the emotional side. You work with military families long enough, and you hear the stories — deployments, loss, sacrifice, moving every couple of years. It gets real. And when you feel that weight, you can’t just clock in and out. You’ve gotta care — and that means carrying the stress with them sometimes.
But you know what? Every bump in the road taught me something. Every challenge sharpened my mission. And the struggles? They’ve only made the wins that much sweeter.
So no, it hasn’t been smooth — but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Because now I get to wake up every day and fight for the folks who’ve fought for us. That’s worth every detour and every late night

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Veteran Community Mortgage isn’t your average mortgage shop. We’re a purpose-driven business built from the ground up to serve Veterans, active-duty service members, and military families. Period. That’s our specialty, and that’s what we do day in and day out.
While a lot of lenders can do VA loans, most don’t really understand them. We’re different. This is our lane — and we stay in it with pride.
What We Do:
We help military families buy, refinance, and build homes using their VA home loan benefit. But more than that — we walk with them through the entire journey, making sure they feel confident, informed, and never pressured.
Whether it’s a first-time buyer nervous about their PCS move or a retired Master Sergeant looking to use entitlement again, we tailor our advice and guidance to each unique story.
What Sets Us Apart:
VA Loan Expertise (for real):
We don’t just know the guidelines — we live and breathe them. We’ve helped thousands of Veterans close loans others said weren’t possible.
Straight Talk & Transparency:
No smoke. No mirrors. No jargon. We break things down in plain English and keep the process as stress-free as possible.
Military Culture Matters:
We understand the military lifestyle — the moves, the timelines, the deployments. We don’t just get it; we plan around it.
Education First:
Our mission is to empower, not sell. We put out tons of content (videos, posts, guides) to bust myths and help Veterans truly understand what they’ve earned.
What We’re Known For:
Getting tough VA loans approved that other lenders gave up on
Creative solutions for PCS and dual entitlement situations
Lightning-fast pre-approvals for military house-hunters
A brand that’s bold, patriotic, and unapologetically pro-Veteran
What We’re Most Proud Of:
The trust we’ve built in the Veteran community. We’ve earned a reputation for showing up — not just when it’s easy, but especially when it’s hard. And when a client says, “You treated me like family” — that’s the highest compliment we can get.
🔧 Services We Offer:
VA Purchase Loans
VA IRRRL (Streamline Refinances)
Cash-Out VA Refinances
Jumbo VA Loans
Construction Loans for Veterans
Education & Consultation (for both buyers and Realtors)

Final Word to Your Readers:
At Veteran Community Mortgage, we’re not chasing volume — we’re chasing impact. If you’ve worn the uniform, or love someone who has, we’re here to make sure your homeownership journey is handled with respect, precision, and heart.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
People don’t care how much you know — until they know how much you care.
Yes, I’ve studied the VA loan handbook front to back. Yes, I can rattle off guidelines and entitlement math in my sleep. But knowledge alone isn’t what earns trust — connection does.
Over the years, I’ve learned that what really matters to the Veteran on the other end of the phone isn’t just “Can you get me approved?” — it’s:
“Will you fight for me when things get tough?”
“Will you treat my family like yours?”
“Can I trust you with one of the biggest financial moves of my life?”
And those answers come not from quoting rates or spitting facts — they come from listening, being present, and showing up consistently with heart, honesty, and hustle.
Another big lesson? Stay in your lane and serve with purpose. Once I stopped trying to be a generalist and focused solely on helping Veterans, everything changed. Clarity creates confidence — and when you serve a mission bigger than yourself, the work becomes so much more than just a paycheck.
So yeah, the most valuable lessons weren’t in a training manual. They came from late-night calls with anxious military spouses, from fixing deals other lenders botched, from earning trust one family at a time.
And I wouldn’t trade those lessons for anything.
