Today we’d like to introduce you to Jazma Johnson.
Hi Jazma, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am wife, mother of two beautiful girls, and handsome bonus son, and the owner of A Touch Of Jaz Beauty Salon located in Arlington, TX.
I have been in the hair industry for 16 years. As a little girl I desired to become a hair stylist. My mom supported my dreams and made sure that I signed up for cosmetology in high school. I attended Overton High School in Memphis, TN. “Go Grizzlies”. I was blessed to complete the cosmetology program while in high school, but not without a few hurdles. After numerous attempts, I successfully passed my cosmetology exam! I never gave up on myself! At the age of 19, I was a licensed cosmetologist. No kids you couldn’t tell me I wasn’t making good money back then, lol.
Fast Forward February 2019, I enrolled at The Institute Of Beauty “Tennessee’s First Natural Hair School” to obtain my instructors license.
During this time I decided to relocate after obtaining my educators license. August 2020, I moved to Arlington,TX at the peek of COVID.. Let’s just say “I WAS AFRAID” but I was more than ready for the challenge.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, the road wasn’t easy, but surely worth the ride. I opened up my 1st salon exactly one month before Covid hit. All I know/knew is hair. How was I going provide for my kids and pay for this suite that I acquired. I prayed and stuck to my plan. In the midst of COVID, I moved to Arlington, TX. No clients, no salon just a girl with a passion.
After opening, A Touch of Jaz here in February 2021, I had to figure out how to network through social media to begin building clientele and business friends.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I am a licensed instructor. I specialize in custom color and kid’s hair. I offer natural and relaxed hair services. I knew people here that were looking for a stylist that could take care of natural hair and kid’s hair. I love to do kid’s hair I refer to them as little princesses. To see their faces light up after their service, it’s priceless. This gives me the opportunity to pour into each girl that sits in my chair, letting them know that they are unique and wonderful no matter if their hair is long, short, kinky, curly, or braided with beads.
All things color. I love being able to use someone’s hair as my canvas. Change is always good so why not add A Touch of Jaz to your color to brighten things up a little. Whether it’s peekaboo for the everyday working woman or a little bold and vibrant for the more outgoing woman.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Advice I would give to the younger me or an upcoming stylist would be to believe in yourself and keep going. Don’t let anything stop you from achieving your goals. Have a set price for everyone including family and friends. Deal don’t pay bills, lol. Stay current on the new styles. Most of all Never Ever stop learning.
