Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Morales.
Hi Jennifer, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
There were several reasons why my husband Ruben and I started Tierra a Taza Coffee Cart. The first being our love of coffee and second was being able to share our beautiful culture through coffee. Coming from a Mexican background, coffee has always played a big role in our lives from it always being at the breakfast table to coffee accompanying the pan dulce at night but it wasn’t until a few years ago that we became obsessed with learning as much as possible about coffee. As our coffee knowledge grew, so did our creative freedom allowing us to infuse our Mexican roots in the flavors we create. It all started with wanting to make the best Horchata Latte made the traditional way. This was really what propelled us to have the dream of sharing our love of coffee and love of our culture through our coffee catering company.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road. From the very beginning of building our small business we have been presented with obstacles to overcome. The first being how to build a coffee cart. We are not the first to build a coffee cart but it is a fairly newer concept and there was no clear blueprint on how to build it. All we knew is that we wanted to make our coffee cart unique and special to our business. We watched every YouTube video we could find on woodworking, tools, plumbing, painting, sanding, and coffee equipment. This is only one of the struggles we have faced. At every step of creating our business we have been presented with challenges whether it is figuring out permits to posting on social media and booking our first event. Even with the resources available, we made many mistakes along the way but are thankful for each and every one of the mistakes because there have been lessons and knowledge gained in each one.
We’ve been impressed with Tierra a Taza Coffee Cart, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Tierra a Taza Coffee Cart is a specialty coffee catering company. We specialize in creating a coffee shop experience for all types of events ranging from weddings, corporate events, parties, and more. Tierra a Taza translates to Earth to Mug in homage of the coffee process from planting, harvesting, green buying, roasting, grinding, and finally brewed into your mug. We marry our passion of coffee with our Mexican culture by incorporating Mexican ingredients into our latte recipes. We created lattes such as our Horchata Latte, Mexican Vanilla Bean Latte, and Mexican Hot Chocolate lattes using the freshest of ingredients and using traditional Mexican preparations never sacrificing the quality of our products.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc.?
One of our favorite apps is Audible. We listen to books to get inspired or to learn about topics that can help us develop our business. We also listen to Keys to the Shop podcast on Spotify that is an excellent resource for owning a coffee business. Lastly, we watch YouTube videos from successful individuals in the coffee industry such as James Hoffman and Lance Hedrick to gain product knowledge and coffee knowledge in general.
