Hi Joe, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Joe O’Bryant and I am the Founder and CEO of Drafting Dreamz. Drafting Dreamz is a Dallas-based design and build company that caters to homeowners, investors, and contractors all over Texas and soon to be other states. In 2017, a neck injury caused me to be paralyzed for two weeks from my body being worn out from working two full-time warehouse jobs. After returning to work and being treated like an incompetent employee for getting hurt, I proposed never to work that hard for anyone but myself ever again. When I got my degree, I only received one job offer in Mississippi. The pay was horrible; therefore, I decided to keep my current job and felt my education was a waste of time. I decided to show my skills and expertise here in Texas. I bought software and started helping contractors pull permits with the city. Word traveled very fast about my quality of work; therefore, I decided to dedicate my energy to helping people with their residential and commercial projects and formed my first ever business.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Money was the biggest struggle. I was living paycheck to paycheck, in debt, with no credit or savings. I sold clothes, shoes, tools, and electronics to buy the necessary laptop and the essential software to begin. I had to learn everything about running a business because I did not have any friends or family members who were entrepreneurs. In 2017, I started reading books looking for answers to help me perfect my company. Learning how to form a company, advertising, payment software, and much more left me with an overwhelming feeling each night. Another significant struggle was that only half of my plans were approved in the first year on the first try. I spent months at the city permit office learning all of the code requirements needed for the jobs to be approved. Most of the time I did so without payment just to make sure my clients were completely satisfied with my service.
As you know, we’re big fans of Drafting Dreamz. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Drafting Dreamz specializes in blueprint designs and construction. I’ve helped hundreds of investors who flipped homes and built new construction. I’ve helped them understand how design affects their budget and timeline. I’ve helped homeowners find the right contractor for their jobs by providing and educating them on blueprints and the remodeling process. I’ve helped many contractors land their next job by showing their clients what was possible if they decided to remodel their homes. I am known for accurate drawings and a stress-free environment to share ideas and make people’s wildest dreams come to fruition. I am proud to have expanded across Texas and have hired Draftsmen, Architects, Engineers, and Contractors who are just as eager as I am to help people achieve their dreams correctly and up to code.
Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I am a risk-taker and will bet it all on myself. I’ve never had a plan B. I’ve just focused on making Plan A as huge as I can get it. It all starts with creating immense value. If your risk is making someone’s life easier, then that is a risk worth taking. The first years were challenging, but the people whom I helped never forgot me. They made sure to tell others about my company which has caused me to be the success I am today. I was a warehouse worker just trying to get by with no knowledge of entrepreneurship. I may have been fueled by my disdain of working for others, but that sparked a fire in me to take my leap of faith.
