Hidden Gems: Meet Jon Mark Horton of Illumin8 Chiropractic

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jon Mark Horton.

Hi Jon, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Growing up in a small town in Arkansas, I was always grateful for a community with so many familiar faces and acts of kindness. I truly believe that I am drawn to Grapevine, TX because of the community I had and also because of my family that taught me how important it is to surround yourself with good people. Now with that being said, my family means everything to me. Beginning my career as a chiropractic student and pursuing my specific areas of interest have always been guided by my respect and love for my family. My mother and three older sisters have all chosen careers in health care. This increased my respect for healthcare providers and inspired me to pursue Chiropractic after graduating from Arkansas State University. That being said, I started school with no nieces or nephews and ended school with five… so you could say that pediatric and prenatal chiropractic was something I gravitated towards specifically in order to understand how to possibly advise my sisters throughout their pregnancies. I had no idea that I would fall in love with family care and the daily innate healing that I see in families who value chiropractic care. It is truly a blessing to serve the Grapevine community, and I am grateful to God for directing my path here.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There have been numerous obstacles that have attempted to derail my path to becoming a chiropractor. When I started school in 2019, a tornado hit Irving, TX, where my school, Parker University, was located, causing significant damage to several of our buildings. We were sent home, and I had only been in the program for a few weeks. Not knowing if we would be able to return, I frantically applied to other programs in order to secure a spot for the upcoming semester if I did not have a school to attend, but fortunately, our school was determined to keep the doors open. Once we got past that, we entered our third trimester, during which the terrible pandemic struck, making it even more difficult for us to continue our education. Moving forward throughout the pandemic, my thinking was that the obstacles were over, and I have faced all the challenges, but little did I know what was to come! After finishing my didactic portion of school and applying for clinical rotation locations, I was matched with a clinic in Sarasota, FL, where Hurricane Ian hit during my time there. It was an out-of-body experience being within the path of a hurricane; we don’t see too many of those in Arkansas or Texas, so you could say my family was a little panicked for me. Nonetheless, all of the obstacles and challenges I faced taught me valuable lessons, and I believe the unique experiences I had shaped me into a resilient Chiropractor.
