Hidden Gems: Meet Jonathan Olvera of Jonathan Olvera Counseling

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Olvera.

Hi Jonathan, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Counseling is my second career, though it has been quietly present for much of my life. People have often found it easy to open up to me, sharing their stories and struggles early on. I began with training in life coaching and peacemaking (mediation), which laid an important foundation, yet something still felt incomplete. When the opportunity arose to pursue a master’s degree in counseling and work toward licensure, I embraced it wholeheartedly. Over the years, continued training has helped me clarify where my strengths and passion truly lie—relational counseling, particularly working with couples, is the work I find most meaningful and fulfilling.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It wasn’t the smoothest road, nor was it originally on my radar. My previous career came to an end due to circumstances beyond my control, and this path emerged unexpectedly. I had to grieve what was lost before I could move forward. Looking back, I can see how I was led here—each detour and challenge offering guidance and shaping the work I now do.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Jonathan Olvera Counseling?
Jonathan Olvera Counseling is a relational counseling practice focused on helping individuals and couples slow down, understand what’s happening beneath the surface, and move toward deeper connection—with themselves and with others. Much of my work centers on relationship challenges, communication breakdowns, emotional disconnection, grief, and the impact of life transitions.

I specialize in relational counseling and couples work, because relationships are often where people feel the most pain—and also where the most meaningful healing can happen. I draw from approaches like Emotion-Focused Therapy, the Gottman Method, and experiential, attachment-based work. Rather than offering quick fixes, I help clients understand patterns, emotions, and protective strategies that developed for good reasons but may no longer be serving them.

What sets my practice apart is the emphasis on the therapeutic relationship itself. I don’t see counseling as something I “do to” clients, but something we engage in together. I’m attentive to pacing, safety, and helping people feel genuinely seen and understood—especially when they’re carrying shame, grief, or relational wounds. For those who want it, I also thoughtfully integrate a faith-informed perspective, while remaining welcoming and respectful of each client’s beliefs and values.

Brand-wise, what I’m most proud of is the culture of the practice: it’s calm, human, and honest. My goal is for clients to experience counseling as a place where they don’t need to perform, explain away their feelings, or rush toward solutions. Many people tell me they feel relief simply being able to slow down and make sense of their inner world and relationships.

What I want readers to know is that healing doesn’t require perfection—it requires curiosity, compassion, and support. Whether someone is navigating relationship conflict, personal loss, or feeling stuck in familiar patterns, my work is about helping them reconnect to what matters most and move forward with greater clarity and resilience.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
