Hidden Gems: Meet Katie McCoy of Mindwell Therapy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie McCoy.

Hi Katie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I graduated with my Master’s in Social Work in 2016 and began my career in community mental health. My work involved home visits to help families connect, but the reality was often overwhelming; basic needs like food, water, and shelter took priority, while mental health was pushed aside. I found myself in homes where survival was the main focus, and while I wanted to support people emotionally, I realized that without stability, mental health care often felt out of reach. After having my daughter, I knew I wanted something different.

I transitioned to an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), where I led group therapy and psychoeducation. This experience deepened my understanding of structured mental health support, and in 2020, after earning my independent license, I was ready to take the leap and start my own practice.

I started small, renting a room just two days a week. But my passion and dedication helped my practice grow, leading me to open my own office. By 2024, I had expanded even further, hiring interns and other therapists, creating a supportive team, and, most recently, moving into a new location. Now, my focus extends beyond my own practice; I’m involved in community outreach and helping other therapists grow their own careers.

Looking back, I’m incredibly grateful for the journey and for everyone who has supported me along the way. Seeing the impact of quality mental health care fuels my passion every day, and I’m excited for what’s ahead.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No road is ever completely smooth, and mine has been no exception. One of the biggest challenges has been accepting money for something as essential as mental health care. If I could offer therapy for free, I would—but the reality is that this is my livelihood, and I have to provide for myself and my daughter. At times, that guilt has been difficult to navigate, but I’ve learned that sustainability allows me to continue helping others in the long run.

Another major hurdle was transitioning from agency work, where my income was stable, to private practice, where financial ups and downs were part of the early journey. There were moments of uncertainty, but I stayed committed, knowing that the work I was doing mattered. Over time, the community has come to trust us, and now people know our name—they know we’re here to support them. That trust and impact make every challenge along the way worth it.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

At the core of everything we do is a belief in the power of mental wellness, and we’re honored to help guide our clients on their journey to healing and growth.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was an empathetic and sensitive child with a natural gift for understanding others’ feelings. At the same time, I loved to joke around and keep things light, which helped balance my sensitivity with a sense of humor. I became the friend that people felt they could tell anything to without fear of judgment. This unique blend of emotional attunement and playfulness has not only shaped who I am, but also forms the foundation of my approach as a therapist—creating a safe space where empathy meets light-hearted support.
