Hidden Gems: Meet Kavindra Watson of KLW Design Group

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kavindra Watson.

Hi Kavindra, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Design and construction have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Growing up, in south Louisiana, there was always a DIY home improvement project going on at either our home or a relative’s home. One experience that I remember vividly was being actively involved in the building of our family home. My mother graciously let my siblings and I pick a number of the finishes. Looking back 20 plus years later, we made some good and not so good choices; nevertheless, it planted a seed that I would not forget.

Educationally, I chose the traditional path of going to a four-year college. During my high school years, I discovered a natural comfort with computers so I majored in Computer Science. After graduating, I worked in a variety of roles in corporate technology over the course of the following twelve years. Midway through my corporate tenure, I noticed a disconnection between my work and my interests that produced an unfulfillment. Realizing that I was so early into my professional career, I instinctively knew I had to figure out the misalignment.

In 2009, after watching endless hours of HGTV and remembering all of my childhood experiences with design and construction, I listened to the little, but loud voice in my head that said “you can do that, too!” I immediately started to research the backgrounds of Interior Designers, and in the fall of 2010, while continuing to work my full-time corporate job, I enrolled in classes to earn my degree in Interior Design.

Upon completion of my degree plan in 2015, that little, but loud voice in my head spoke to me again and said, “It’s time to fly”. It took me a while to figure out how to transition from my “stable” corporate position to a world that isn’t as guaranteed, but I proudly accepted the challenge. In 2017, I took a leap of faith and transitioned into my passion of designing full-time.

Today, I am a luxury Interior Designer and I specialize in designing custom kitchens and bathrooms. I have designed over 150 spaces through which I have garnered a wealth of knowledge and experience. I married my technical and creative skills to become a creative problem solver. My secret sauce is that I am detailed, precise, process-oriented, and a person who loves creating pretty spaces that function well. I consider myself extremely lucky to have found my dream job.

Creating a customized home is important to me because I am a homebody. So, I fully understand and appreciate the importance of loving the space you’re in. Inside my sanctuary, I am an avid DIYer and one who loves spending time with loved ones. Outside my home, I love traveling, playing tennis, and practicing yoga.

I received my bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from Southern University A&M College in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and an Applied Science degree in Green Interiors and Architecture Design from Collin College in Frisco, TX. Additionally, I am a member of the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA), National Association of Realtors (NAR), and the Texas Association of Realtors (TAR).

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey has been unconventional yet intentional. It has required a lot of patience and discipline. Each step of the way has prepared me for the next. In my corporate technology tenure, I worked in sales, project management, and business analysis. I use the skills that I acquired from those roles to advance my current business as an Interior Designer. As my business continues to grow, I will continue to be strategic, intentionally aware, and deliberate.

As you know, we’re big fans of KLW Design Group. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I established the KLW Design Group, LLC in 2016. We help our clients create their dream home by guiding them through the transformational process. Often, customers are intimidated and overwhelmed at the thought of construction, and we have curated a detailed process to alleviate the stress. Our primary focus is designing luxury kitchen and bathrooms.

In addition to helping clients tailor their existing homes, as a licensed Texas Realtor, we also help clients who would like to purchase a new home that they intend to customize to meet their needs and desires. We can see the potential of a dated home and work to help clients visualize the possibilities.

Afterwards, we walk homeowners through both the purchasing and design process. Think of it as the Texas version of the HGTV show Property Brothers.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
A fun fact about myself is my celebrity dream client is Jamie Foxx. I think he would be a super laid-back, go-with-the-flow client that would keep me laughing and inspired at the same time.
