Hi La Shawn, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey with natural hair care started as a very personal mission. Like so many women, I spent years pushing my hair through the wear and tear of heat and glue from tracks. My hair had become brittle and thin, and it felt like it was only getting worse. In 2013, I made a choice to stop the cycle and go natural, hoping to bring my hair back to health. But even with protective styles like braids and sew-ins, the health and length I wanted just wasn’t there. After some serious soul-searching, I decided to try micro-locs in 2017—a decision that finally changed everything.
But it didn’t take long to notice that most products on the market just weren’t right for my hair. They left it feeling dry, unmanageable, or simply didn’t help it grow. I began experimenting with my own essential oil blend, mixing ingredients that I knew could strengthen and nurture hair from the roots. This blend became a part of my daily routine, evolving into what’s now the Original Crown Mist and Original Crown Oil.
The true turning point for Sires Crown Natural Hair Essentials came in 2022. My grandson Sire had developed severe cradle cap, which stopped his hair from growing, and nothing we tried seemed to help. So I decided to use my oil on his scalp each day. Slowly but surely, the cradle cap began to clear, and his hair started to grow. That was when I realized this wasn’t just my journey anymore. Sires Crown was meant to be shared.
Before this path with Sires Crown, I spent over 25 years in managerial roles, at a Fortune 500 telecommunications company, where I worked as a Certified Project Management Professional and Transformation Lead. I mentored so many employees and taught courses in project management. In 2017, I even launched an independent travel agency, Masters Degree Travel. My journey is fueled by a deep love for learning, service, and entrepreneurship. I hold a Doctorate in Business Administration, an MBA, and several professional certifications. I’m also a longtime member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and believe in the power of community, service, and sisterhood.
Today, with Sires Crown, I’m proud to offer products that mean so much to me and that are already making a difference in the lives of others. Through Sires Crown, I’m here to celebrate, nurture, and honor every crown that comes along this path. My story and Sires Crown’s are intertwined, and I’m honored to be on this journey, one that I hope inspires others to find and embrace the beauty of their own natural hair.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No it has definitely not been a smooth road. Our products are loved by those who have experienced them. However, getting the word out about our products and marketing has been a struggle. Additionally, learning and navigating the natural hair care space has been an experience. One such experience we had our first year was stepping out on faith and attending a big hair care show in Atlanta. I made lots of product and shipped it all to Atlanta half of the product was damaged on delivery and what was delivered had to be relabeled. We finally get setup at the show which was very expensive entry fee for a new business only to discover that this kind of show is really meant for established businesses because the large hair care companies that attended were giving away large amounts of free product so no one was buying from the small hair care companies like mine. This taught us to be more diligent about the vendor opportunities we choose to participate in.
