Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcus Thompkins.
Hi Marcus, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My story started while working for a Fortune 500 company as an account executive. I was always someone who knew they want to be a business person and wanted more out of life in general. While working for a fortune 500 was great and had a lot of perks, it wasn’t fulfilling. When my wife saw an opportunity to open our first hair salon that was our start into entrepreneurship.
We opened up a very successful salon where I handled all the backend business. A bit after that word had got around that I owned a business and I was told I could stay with certain conditions or leave with six months salary and medical. So I took the latter. After building the business up, we sold it and moved to North Carolina. We owned several salons and a salon suite before everyone started doing it. Along the way, I learned I had a passion for food. I was the last one who realized it, lol. So we opened a catering business called Hunger Pangs. We had success but NC wasn’t a good state for entrepreneurs so I started looking for our next move. Which brought us to Texas. After moving here and starting back up our catering business, I wanted to do something different. Something that would be innovating and different. Thats where RockStar Pets was born. Our latest and greatest venture. We are a USDA certified pet transporter that provides breeders around the world the ability to get their pets personally delivered to customers anywhere they are allowed.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There has been a lot of challenges but I like to refer to them as lessons. When I started doing this, there wasn’t a guide and information wasn’t shared the way it is now. It wasn’t glamourous to say I’m an entrepreneur! You lost money, got depressed but the one thing was you didn’t quit!. You learned from the mistakes you made. Challenges make you stronger and this life is not for the weak at heart. I struggled with finding quality people to hire, managing the finances of running a business, tax issues, shady contractors when building out a location and fixing equipment. The big one work/life balance.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We offer a safe airport to airport pet transportation service with personalized care and attention to our clients. We are a USDA certified pet transporter that transports purebred pets all across the globe. We are known for our customer service, attention to detail and getting the job done. We pride ourselves on the passion that we put forth in doing what we love and it shows… I think our most proud accomplishment is when some of the top breeders in the country tell us we want your company to deliver all our pets exclusively. That shows us how highly regarded our brand is that they want to partner with us. If you are thinking about purchasing that puppy, you want to get it to you as quickly and safely as possible, that’s where we come in. Hire a professional!
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I define success as being true to yourself and the things you define as important. I don’t define it in terms of money. I am successful because I have been married for 26 years to my beautiful wife, raised three children who understand what love is and what it means to be strong. And having peace in my mind and life.
