Hidden Gems: Meet Mary Rowley of Type A Creations

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Rowley.

Mary, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I come from an artistic family and have always created art or done DIY projects as a side hustle, but during the pandemic, a friend of mine suggested I start using my painting skills on furniture. I started showing my pieces on Instagram and Facebook and got some really good feedback, so I started a business. I paint on all types of furniture and décor and still fulfill requests for canvas paintings. I currently list my items on Etsy (for shipping all over the US) and sell locally out of my booth (A24) at the Plano Antique Mall, 6505 W Park Blvd, Plano, TX 75093.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Learning to paint with a variety of furniture paint on furniture has had some challenges, but I conquered them, and I’m enjoying everything about it. Each type of paint has their own textures and finishes. You can even paint fabric, and it remains soft and pliable. I do one-of-a-kind pieces that appeal to each person differently, but people really seem to enjoy the unique and personalized touch even when it is not to their taste.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Type A Creations?
I find a lot of discarded vintage and antique furniture, and I breathe new life into them, and clients bring me their pieces to refresh or update. Anyone can buy new particleboard furniture, but I like the history of older, solid wood pieces. Most pieces speak to me, and some clients will have their specific ideas of what they are looking for in their space, and I use that to create the perfect piece. Some pieces scream color and patterns, and some whisper simple and pretty. All my pieces are thoroughly cleaned, prepped, repaired, or repurposed, painted, or stained, and sealed for daily use.

What matters most to you? Why?
I want people to enjoy their spaces, so I create pieces that, hopefully, makes them smile and maybe starts a conversation at gatherings. Real wood furniture can be refinished repeatedly, but the history and memories live on for generations. This is why I’ve really enjoyed refinishing or renewing old furniture.
