Hidden Gems: Meet Mrs. Oluwabunmi of Lickfinger Kitchen LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mrs. Oluwabunmi.

Hi Mrs., we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I moved from Nigeria to the U.S. in 2018, carrying more than just luggage; I carried the flavors, traditions, and warmth of home. When I settled in Dallas, I realized there was a real gap for authentic Nigerian food prepared with care, intention, and consistency.

Back in Lagos, I trained as a baker, where I learned to bake cakes because I grew up in a home where my mom loved to bake. She would bake the most delicious cakes, cook, and we never ran out of great snacks and food. So it built my passion, wanting me to learn more, how to decorate for myself or people around me. Then, in university, I started baking while studying biological science. This process shaped me. It taught me discipline, patience, and the importance of process in the kitchen. With cakes, you can’t rush the process; we all know you have to select the best ingredients as well. That foundation shaped how I approach food today. What started as cooking for friends and family slowly grew into something bigger. People kept saying, “This food is so good, it’s lickfinger worthy,” and that’s how LickFinger was born.

By 2019, LickFinger became more than just food; it became a way to serve culture, memories, and joy to a growing community in Dallas.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t been smooth, and I don’t think meaningful journeys ever are. Starting as an immigrant entrepreneur came with challenges, limited resources, learning the U.S. business system, balancing quality with growth, and building trust from the ground up. There were moments of doubt, long hours, and plenty of learning curves. But every challenge strengthened the brand and clarified the vision. Those struggles taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of staying true to my values.

As you know, we’re big fans of Lickfinger Kitchen LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
LickFinger is a Dallas-based food brand rooted in Nigerian cuisine with an Afro-fusion twist. We specialize in freshly prepared meals, signature dishes like our Jollof Fusion Bowl, handcrafted small chops, sauces, spice blends, and curated food experiences.

What sets us apart is our commitment to doing things the right way, locally sourced ingredients when possible, food cooked fresh daily, and recipes that honor tradition while embracing creativity. Every dish is intentional. We don’t cut corners, and we don’t follow trends just to fit in.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
One of my favorite childhood memories is being in the kitchen with my family, especially during holidays and special occasions. The house would be filled with the smell of spices, simmering sauces, and fresh pastries, and everyone had a role. Everyone had a role, including my dad. Everyone in the LickFinger family can create a master piece in the kitchen.

Food has always been a way to bring people together, and I take that responsibility seriously. I want LickFinger to continue being a bridge between cultures, a source of joy, and proof that when you stay true to your roots, your story can resonate far beyond where you started.
