Hidden Gems: Meet Nailah Karim of Domeabra Fashion

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nailah Karim

Nailah, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us  today. Where does your story begin?
Domeabra Fashion all started with a conversation with my mother. Talking  about living in Ghana as a child and the influence it has always had on me. From  a very young age, sewing and creating have always been a huge part of my life. I  have always been a creative individual but fashion just connected differently.

The name for the brand was originated by my interest of the word, Domeabra. My  mother explained the meaning and told me it was the name of a town and a  phrase. Once my mother explained it to me, I knew it was the perfect name to  use. With two different interpretations, I picked the one that fit best and applied  it to my brand, creating my first collection for my graduation exhibition and  continuing the path forward.

From the Ghanaian language Twi, Domeabra means “Come to me, if you love  me”. Domeabra Fashion exemplifies “Beauty, Excellence, and Confidence”. I  believe my brand produces quality one of a kind garments. The garments are

bold and allow you to stand out. Every garment has meaningful African prints  incorporated into the design.

A little bit of background on me. I am the CEO of Domeabra Fashion. I have an  Associate’s degree from the University of the Fraser Valley and a Bachelor’s  Degree from Indiana University in Fashion Design. I have a variety of skills in  beading, sewing, pattern drafting, photography, videography, etc. I want to be  able to change the way fashion uses African prints, while incorporating my  heritage into each and every design. I love it when I can put a smile on a client’s  face and bring their vision to life.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path  overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome? It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. I have always had doubt and have felt

like I wasn’t able to get as much brand exposure necessary. I always try to  incorporate my designs in the outfits I create and bring awareness to my brand  with word of mouth.

Even when it’s felt like I’ve had obstacles in my way, I have always had a great  support system around me. From friends and family supporting me, modeling for  me, directing photoshoots for me, helping me when I have a mental block and  providing me with advice and feedback on how to improve my brand.

The obstacles have definitely made me second guess. Then I remember how far  I’ve come and how many people have worn my designs and the custom garments  I’ve made for them, it just reminds me my brand has a purpose and has a place in  the fashion industry.

There is a quote that has stuck with me and has given me hope and faith to keep  going; “If something is taking longer than you expect, remember it takes 13  hours to build a Toyota and 6 months to build a Rolls Royce.” ~ Jay Shetty

What was your favorite childhood memory?
One of my favorite childhood memories is when I was living in Ghana. My  grandfather would tell us stories, teach us the culture and tell us about his  childhood and how he grew up in Brofoyedru. He would always have Kingsbite  chocolate with him and make us guess which hand it was in. Being around him  was so peaceful and it always brought a lot of love and laughter.
