Today we’d like to introduce you to Nash Bayoud.
Hi Nash, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Turning Tides was born from our need to look hot without harming the planet and the people on it. A couple years ago, my partner in life and business, Taylor, and I were shopping for eco-friendly clothes, but all we found were boring, soggy-oatmeal-looking clothes. We started making clothes for ourselves and, after seeing how much people loved our designs, decided to sell them.
The small Turning Tides team makes everything by hand using deadstock and upcycled materials.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road to any great destination is never smooth. We’ve seen many potholes, but we keep going because we truly believe in fun and sustainable fashion.
It’s always a struggle selling your own ideas. You have to believe in yourself without question. Selling your ideas can be embarrassing at times. When ideas or campaigns flop, you have to stay up and keep smiling. You fall in front of your whole audience, and you keep going.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Turning Tides is an online eco-friendly shop providing you with fun garments and accessories made from deadstock and upcycled materials. We use materials that otherwise would end up in landfills to create unique works of wearable art. All our works are hand-made by our team here in Dallas, Texas.
We offer a sustainable repair service—if your item gets damaged, we will accept it to potentially be fixed and returned to you. If the item is beyond repair, we will remain in contact to find an agreeable solution.
What were you like growing up?
When I was a kid, I was determined to become the first woman president. As a child, I would start little “businesses” out of anything I could. I would go around my neighborhood and trade the food we had in our house until I got a new VHS tape or video game. I sold dresses made out of construction paper and earrings made from paperclips. I took art classes constantly and even won a few awards for drawing and photography in high school. I never thought I’d get into fashion design, but I’m ever so glad I did.
Taylor was a born artist. She was an only child with a single working mom, so she was always finding new ways to be creative and entertain herself. She developed a love for fashion in her early years, although her taste was questionable at times… but whose isn’t? She started a t-shirt business out of her garage at 11 years old but quickly became preoccupied with this new thing called MySpace. She started to move from physical to digital artistic expression, where she found a love for Photoshop. This ultimately led her to acquiring her BFA in graphic design. Now she’s come full circle with our apparel line, Turning Tides, and uses her graphic-design-based eye to give sustainable clothing a bold and memorable look.
