Hidden Gems: Meet Navjot Hughes of Empower Mental Health

Today we’d like to introduce you to Navjot Hughes.

Hi Navjot, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
From teen mom to master’s prepared mental health nurse Practitioner/Entrepreneur

My journey has been rough but nonetheless rewarding. I was born in India and raised in Dallas. We are immigrants, and thus our low socio-economic status was very limiting to my growth. Additionally, my mindset also limited me from growing, and I fell into a cycle of self-sabotage. There are a handful of people in my life that pushed me to grow as an individual, mother, and a provider. The teen mom phase was a difficult phase for me. My family and I have experienced many unfortunate events. Becoming a young widow at a young age while taking care of children was a difficult journey. I chose to keep growing. I finally let go and gave myself permission to grow. I trusted myself, the process, and continued to advance my education.

My dream was to become the person I needed at a young age. I neglected my mental health for the longest time, stuck in a survival mindset.

Now more than ever, I am supporting myself and others in their mental health journey. My goal is raise awareness and destigmatize mental health. I lead teen support groups in public school setting as a volunteer. My goal is to aid teen moms in their journey. Our mental health services include medication management and therapy services,

My path hasn’t always been clear. Now that I am here, I have gained an irreplaceable sense of clarity. My vision is to increase mental healthcare access for all and let others know they are not alone.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The journey has been rough, nonetheless rewarding. I grew up in the slums of India and then grew up an impoverished humbling setting. My immediate family member suffered from their own mental illnesses. There was no time for mental health, mostly just illness. Consequently, the decisions that I made were self-sabotaging. The cycle continued for an extended period.

We had some unforeseen, traumatic events that have occurred in the family. I have experienced multiple personal traumas. What once felt like a weakness has turned into my biggest strength. I chose to not allow the statistics to define me as my choices are far greater than any statistic.

We’ve been impressed with Empower Mental Health, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We offer mental health services that include therapy and medication management support. Our approach is very unique. We give back to the community through volunteership, professional and student mentorships and allow for limited pro-bono cases.

Empower Mental Health offers an integrative approach. We truly care about your mental health and are willing to meet you where you are at in life. We are inspired by all those who invest in their mental health, as it is a highly courageous evolutionary journey. We empower you to first help yourself and then those around you.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up I was socially awkward and felt like I didn’t relate to others. The culture shock was real, and I felt like a misfit. The weird kid on the block. The one person I bonded with was my younger brother. It was difficult for me to make and keep friends. My younger brother will remain my best friend as he has always been the most supportive person anyone could ask for. I am so thankful for him as he helped me survive through my trauma.
