Hidden Gems: Meet Oniel Thomas of Don’s Yaad Nyammings Catering, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Oniel Thomas

Hi Oniel, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My name is Oniel “Don” Thomas, Born and raised in Portmore Jamaica. As a youth, I was always in the kitchen with my mom while she cooked. I’d watch as she talked me through the importance of adding love to everything you prepared. I learned the ingredients to most of her recipes as I would run to the market for her to collect them. My mom is one of the best cooks I know. I learned from her. As I got older she would watch me prepare meals for our family. These were some of the best days of my life! When I graduated I moved to St. Elizabeth Parish where I worked at the family restaurant for many years. One day it hit me that I needed my own restaurant. In 2017, I moved to America to fulfill my dream.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Entrepreneurship is certainly not for the weak. I didn’t know a lot about starting a business, paying taxes, or even licensing to prepare and or sell foods. It took some time but with resilience, patience, and determination I finally completed my testing for my license. I got my permits, registered my business and set up shop.
