Hidden Gems: Meet Rebecca Hogg of Canvas Counseling & Wellness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Hogg.

Rebecca Hogg

Hi Rebecca, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I LOVE what I do, and it is very fulfilling! I’m an intuitive and creative facilitator of (w)holistic healing so people can experience more peace internally that extends to their everyday life. I have had and continue to go to therapy as needed, which has allowed me to learn what I liked and didn’t like about counseling so I can provide clients more of what they need. I had 2 other careers prior: I did legal assisting, and I was a teacher, both of which have benefited me greatly in my current career helping clients with advocating for and educating themselves in order to heal. I started as a counselor in an alternative school and in a group practice outside of school for several years and then branched out to my own practice, Canvas Counseling and Wellness (CCW) in the summer of 2019.   The reason behind the name is Canvas for resilience and the opportunity to recreate and Wellness because it’s so valuable to look at the person (w)holistically: mind, body, spirit.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, and yet I am grateful for all I have learned through struggle and adversity. It has shaped me into the person I am now. CCW didn’t “take off” for over a year, and although I had some clients, I also supported myself through providing childcare, administrative assisting, and renting out rooms in my home. This goes with what I tell my clients: slow is smooth, smooth is fast. In graduate school, we’re not taught how to run a business, so I learned and am continuing to learn all the various aspects, from marketing to bookkeeping as well as when to delegate. I often tell my clients, “I wouldn’t ask you to do anything I haven’t done or wouldn’t be willing to do myself.” I continue to work on myself because I can only take clients as far as I have gone or would be willing to go.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Canvas Counseling & Wellness?
-We specialize in Trauma and trauma, meaning the wide range of offenses and hurts, severe and minor, that can occur and build up in the human experience. T/trauma is something we EXPERIENCE. It is more than something that happens to us…it can become a part of us. It leaves an imprint that can impact the entirety of how we think, feel, and respond from that point on. So, too, therapy needs to be a total EXPERIENCE. We provide not only talk therapy but also at the moment, Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR), Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Somatic Experiencing (SE), Expressive Creative Arts Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Play Therapy, and (coming soon) Psychedelic Assisted Therapy using Ketamine.

– We believe that behavior & thought makes sense, even though it may not be helpful.

– We treat holistically: mind, body and spirit.

– Every therapist brings in varying and unique life experiences, which create diverse and different therapy environments to meet all our client’s needs.

– We value taking care of our own mental health so that we can be as present as possible.

– We affirm that therapy is for you and your EXPERIENCE. So, we work collaboratively to help you reach your goals at a pace that’s comfortable for you.

– We value post-traumatic growth.

– What I love about our brand is that we facilitate and communicate change. Our canvases are not permanent. They are always changing. We can always paint a new coat.

– We offer regular and concierge/intensive sessions in the office, online, and personally in your home.

– Our therapists really value staying current and relevant through research, reading, continuing education courses, seminars, and therapy retreats.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
Richardson is a small city feel with lots of options close by, including great parks and walking trails as well as food and hotel options. It’s close to several highways that reach bigger cities like North Dallas and Plano. In the 3.5 years of being in Richardson, I haven’t run into anything I don’t like about the area we’re in. I have to mention again that Richardson has really great parks!
