Hidden Gems: Meet Robin Burrill of Signature Home Services

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robin Burrill.

Robin Burrill

Hi Robin, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
I’ve had the privilege of narrating my story multiple times, but I love the opportunity to retell it because I always find myself focusing on different elements.

I’ve been in the design industry for over three decades. In telling my story, though, it’s never the glittering professional milestones I think of first. My story is one triumph over adversity. It’s one of surviving everything that’s come my way. There’s been my own journey with cancer, my mother’s, my father’s, my husband’s…each of these had a profound impact on what I could do professionally in the moment and what I CHOSE to do on the other side.

Through these experiences, I discovered the profound power of choice…that agency to sculpt our destinies according to the deepest dreams we nurture. Choices are where we define the lives we want to live!!!

The biggest “real life” bumps that impacted my career were my own diagnosis with breast cancer and the medical journey that came after Rob (my husband and founder and president of our firm) had a serious fall from a roof. These were the crucibles that shaped not just my professional choices but the essence of my being.

There have been other key moments in my career, too, including everything from up years to down ones to hires and fires and more than one legal struggle that tested our mettle. But the rewards and lessons from each were smaller than the takeaways from my cancer treatment and the enduring relationships with repeat clients over the years. It’s these longer segments of the journey, sometimes humming in the background while brash and flashy things happen in the foreground, that shaped my values and sharpened my talent.

Remember…within the folds of struggle lie the seeds of growth, and within the realm of choice lies the power to craft a life that resonates with your purpose and passion.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Has it been a smooth road? No…and I don’t believe successful people have smooth roads, ever. How else would someone learn what they’re capable of? How would someone reach their full potential?

I’ve said before that my breast cancer diagnosis was the worst and the best thing to happen to me. I was amazed at the support I received from my family, friends, and so many others who reached out. I was forced to face what I thought I couldn’t possibly handle, and then I push through anyway. It was a whole new world waiting for me on the other side of treatment.

Of course, Rob was by my side the whole time, and we were still trying to do business while it was all happening. No one could run our business for us, and so we faced daily decisions of work and personal life balance. It tested my limits. I got comfortable with being uncomfortable. We both grew in so many ways…and became truly superb at essential business skills like prioritization and making smart decisions when things (inevitably) don’t go according to plan.

Today, Rob and I are two “no-nonsense” professionals. We’re direct with our clients and our staff—and with each other! We get stuff done. We’re constantly presented with new challenges, new information, new ideas…and being direct doesn’t mean we’re closed to the things that come our way. We’re simply decisive with them. Life can throw whatever it wants our way now…I am confident we will make confident and constructive choices.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next, you can tell us a bit more about your business.
Signature Home Services is what is called a “design-build” firm within the renovation space. This is because we have designers on staff (all under me, the Principal Designer, registered with the State of Texas and with my alphabet soup of associations). Therefore, we guide our residential clients through a seamless experience from the first time they share their dream to the full design and production of that renovation.

Another branch of our business I’m personally excited about is the Signature Design side. This is the sub-brand we’ve built so I can personally work with clients on interior design-only projects to breathe new life into their environment.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Now, THIS is a question I haven’t answered too many times!

As a child, I loved being a big sister. Looking back, it’s a chicken-and-egg question now…did I become the confident leader I am today as a result of being the oldest of two? Or was I naturally drawn to leadership, which manifested in my behavior as a kid?

Being a big sister definitely nursed my strong personality and having that defined personality is what later shaped my own design style. Because yes, I have a style—I have what I love and what I would never recommend anyone…but I’m also creative and compassionate and love working with clients to make their preferred look a reality, just like those countless times I worked with my brother to find middle ground.

I can’t define one “favorite childhood memory,” but in general, I was a happy big sister, for sure!
