Hidden Gems: Meet Sarah Rees of Brave Space

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Rees.

Sarah Rees

Sarah, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
After receiving my Master of Clinical and Mental Health Counseling degree, I gained experience in agency, hospital, and private practice settings for several years.

After various settings, I set my dream of opening my practice. At first, I started independently, leasing a small office. Over the years, opportunities began to arise to add more to my team, which evolved into the group practice I have today.

Let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
The transition from a solo to a group practice has taken a lot of risk, patience, and evolution.

The greatest challenge is understanding and implementing all of the various aspects of business without an actual business degree! However, great people have guided me in business finance, marketing, and employment operations.

We’ve been impressed with Brave Space, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart?
Brave Space was founded to provide mental health support for children, teens, parents, and their families. Our approach to counseling focuses on establishing an environment where a person feels safe, accepted, and genuinely cared about to better resolve problems.

We specialize in and are most known for Play Therapy. This treatment modality is evidence-based and effective for children ages 3 to 12. Play Therapy allows children to use play as their natural way of communicating to process the traumas, stressors, and challenges they have experienced. In addition to Play Therapy, we utilize expressive art therapy, activity therapy, and sand tray therapy with teens, parents, and adults.

The most important piece to our treatment process at Brave Space is the collaborative approach we use with caregivers, schools, doctors, and other helping professionals. We provide support for parents, alongside their child’s therapy, to help parents increase their confidence in parenting, understand their child, and decrease overall stress.

At Brave Space, we focus on tailoring our approach to each unique family, treating the child as a whole, not just the problem. While we help manage unwanted behaviors driven by intense emotions, we also increase confidence, self-esteem, responsibility, and appropriate communication. We take pride in the quality of care for each of our families.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
In growing a business with a team, honesty and transparency have been vital.

While there may be difficult conversations with team members about upcoming changes, I have learned that openness in the “whys” behind decisions helps others understand and value the vision.
