Hidden Gems: Meet Sukanya Madhav of Sing for Stars

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sukanya Madhav

Hi Sukanya , so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My name is Sukanya Madhav, and I have always loved choir and singing. I have been in my school choir since 3rd grade. A lot of my friends also take choir as well and also love singing! So this was an idea started by my friend. Our sophomore year of high school, my friend got the idea to do voice lessons over the summer for kids ages 4-13 and make a non-profit. She said that we could be teachers, and I thought it was a very unique idea and I thought it would be fun to teach. So, we started trying to get everything set up over the summer and we got more teachers. We started very early in the summer, and we spread the information about Sing for Stars through social media and we got a lot of students. I think that teaching these kids has been wonderful and I think that all the students are really talented and sweet and it was so fun to get to know them and be able to work with them and hope that they can have a passion for signing like I do! Now we are just trying to get more teachers and students to join and we are still continuing voice lessons!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There were some complications in the beginning. Making a non-profit was hard in the beginning and trying to figure out how to do it all. We only had three teachers, one of them including me, and one of our teachers in the beginning had to leave for vacation because we had started during the summer, so it was just me and my friend. I had hired another girl from my choir class who was really good, but she also was busy and it was hard communicating with her. She also struggled to do the online classes and was not able to us Google Meetings, which is what we use to do the classes with the students by sending the links to the students parents. Later, my friend also left, so it led me and the other girl and it was really had because I had to do a lot of students. After this though, things went a lot smoother, and we were able to get all out teachers back and be able to teach students throughout the week. Before school started, we sent out an email for all the students that still wanted to continue and not as many as we hoped still wanted to continue but we did understand why some parents didn’t want their children to continue because of school. All of out teachers now are juniors in high school, so we are all taking many Ap classes and studying for the SAT’s so we have been very busy, but we still make time to teach during the week, and on weekends!

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Sing for Stars?
This organization is for voice lessons for kids aged 4-13. We started this so we can create a passion for singing and music and something fun for them to do! WE do all out classes online on Google Meetings, they last 30-40 minutes long, and every week a day before their lesson we send out a link the the parents. We teach Music Theory, which is just learning solfège (hand signs) and learning about the Treble and Bass Clef, and teaching them the basics of singing and sightreading, which is reading notes on a paper. We also choose songs for them based on their musical needs and what they need to improve on and we give them options on songs they may like and they can choose a song they want to learn. I have done choir for 8 years and also take voice lessons myself, along with out other teachers who also have done many years in choir and take voice lessons, so we know how to teach students and help them with their singing abilities. What sets us apart from others is we do more than just teach music, we try to instill a passion and connect with out students and make sure that they enjoy the classes! We also have forms that can give the teachers feedback on how we can improve! We also do all out classes online. I am very proud of how far we have come and how many students have enjoyed the classes, and it makes me very happy when I hear that they enjoy coming to class! We offer classes from all week and we have many available teachers to be able to teach as many students! These lessons are also free, so you don’t need to pay any money! All you have to do is fill out a google form and you will be able to start lessons a week after doing the form! Here is the link: https://forms.gle/Edy6Q6aA75GSmTzT9

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I think taking risk in your business or organization is normal, and that if it means that your business or organization will be more successful because of a risk then I think it is worth it! We have not taken many big risk yet because we are still very new.
