Today we’d like to introduce you to Trey Mathis.
Hi Trey, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve always had a passion for service, leadership, and the business side of sports. I started my career in local government, where I learned how to manage complex operations, solve problems quickly, and work with people from all walks of life. Those years gave me a strong foundation in structure, communication, and accountability.
At the same time, I was deeply involved in sports — studying how teams, events, and organizations work behind the scenes. Over time, friends and colleagues began coming to me for help with operations questions, event planning, and strategy. That interest kept growing, and eventually I realized there was a real need for affordable, practical support in the sports world, especially for smaller programs and developing organizations.
That’s what led me to launch Trey Mathis Consulting: Sports Ops Services. Today, I help teams, events, and athletic programs run smoother, stay organized, and think strategically. What I enjoy most is seeing clients win — not just on the field, but in how their organizations function day to day. It’s been a journey shaped by public service, community involvement, and a genuine love for sports operations, and I’m excited for where it continues to go.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road. Launching a consulting business while working a full-time 9–5, staying active in community and board service, and making time for family and my own self-care has been a real balancing act. There were moments when it felt like I was juggling four different worlds at once.
One of the biggest challenges was simply managing time and energy — learning how to give my best to my day job while still carving out late evenings or early mornings to build Trey Mathis Consulting. There were also times when I had to learn to say no, protect my mental health, and remind myself that growth doesn’t have to be rushed.
But every challenge pushed me to get more organized, more intentional, and more confident in the value of what I’m building. The process hasn’t been perfect, but it’s made the business stronger and made me better at what I do.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Trey Mathis Consulting is built on a simple mission: to give athletic programs, teams, and sports organizations the operational support they usually can’t afford or don’t have the time to build themselves. I focus on the behind-the-scenes work that makes sports run smoothly — everything from event operations and game-day management to organizational planning, logistics, compliance support, and strategic guidance.
What sets me apart is my blend of government operations experience, service-driven leadership, and hands-on understanding of how sports organizations actually function. I’m known for being practical, organized, and solutions-focused. I don’t just offer advice — I help clients build systems, fix problems, and create structures that make their day-to-day easier.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud that Trey Mathis Consulting stands for accessibility, honesty, and results. A lot of sports consulting is geared toward major organizations; my goal is to bring high-quality, professional support to smaller programs, high schools, clubs, and developing organizations who need it just as much.
I want your audience to know that whether it’s improving operations, strengthening game-day execution, planning events, or simply helping a program get organized, my services are designed to take pressure off coaches, athletic directors, and front-office staff so they can focus on what they do best — building athletes and developing teams.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
My best advice is to be genuinely curious and show up consistently. A lot of my best connections came from volunteering, serving on boards, and being active in the spaces I care about — not from formal networking.
Everyone appreciates more attention on the causes they care about. Often, I’ll follow someone online and share their event, product, or service before ever reaching out for mentorship. Many times, the first conversation starts with them thanking me for supporting their content.
Instead of asking what someone can do for you, focus on bringing value and building real relationships. Staying authentic, involved, and open has made all the difference for me.
