Today we’d like to introduce you to Veronica Castro.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I would love to! It all started with a horrible experience I had in 2013. I went with a good friend to get my hair cut “Professionally” and I came out botched!! My hair was almost down to my waist and all I wanted was a “V-shape” layered haircut with only one to two inches max cut off. I got a layer alright! I walked out of there in tears because I now had shoulder length hair with a SINGLE layer going straight across from ear to ear! I was already struggling with my confidence and that only made it worse. Having to go through that experience is what made me look into the beauty industry because I didn’t think it was fair that this “Professional” didn’t care what I wanted and made me feel ugly. The whole purpose of doing it was to feel beautiful and walk out of there with confidence feeling like I’m invincible!
However, I didn’t approach the beauty industry. Every time I talked to someone about it I was advised to stick to a good paying job, something that is secure because beauty professionals struggle. So I left it alone and I enrolled myself in a Pharmacy program and decided once I finish Pharmacy school I would revisit. I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do but I knew I wanted to make women feel beautiful and make it a hobby of mine since I would have a good paying job.
By 2017, I was getting more into makeup but I was not good at it. Especially, when it came down to my eyebrows!! Y’all when I look back at pictures it’s terrifying lol. They were hideous, never the same either too thick, too dark, uneven, or the wrong brown. I remember getting compliments and thinking, “Ok, my eyebrows on fleek!” Haha. Looking back at those pictures that was not the case it was all a lie I needed help lol. That is how I knew I wanted to specialize in eyebrows and came across permanent makeup! I came across a Microblading academy and followed them for two years.
Finally, in 2019 I made the biggest decision ever, I remember prancing back and forth in my co-workers office because I took out a loan to start my Permanent Makeup journey. I was like, “Omg, I did it! I got approved! What did I do? It’s done! I’m doing it! Ok, this is happening. Did I do the right thing? There’s no turning back now!” I was a hot mess hehe. Nonetheless, I took the leap and trusted God to guide me through it. My first training was for Microblading on January 24, 2020. This opened the door to all permanent makeup and I’m addicted. I can’t get enough of it!
My hobby turned into my career, a career that I love and wish I started sooner. Now, Pharmacy is my hobby. It is funny how things work in life. A special thanks to the hairdresser that botched me though lol.
My passion to give back comes from all the people God blessed me with that opened their doors to me and didn’t ask for anything in return.
I knew I was put in this world to give back. Especially, when I see how happy my clients get when they see their results. Hearing, “I never felt so confident,” or “thank you for making me feel beautiful and putting back what cancer took!” That fulfills my heart and lights the fire to my passion. It makes me push harder and it’s a confirmation to myself that I made the right decision! I want you to slay the day and do it confidently. That is how Slay Confidently Brows by Vee was born!
Don’t be afraid to take the leap and do what you love!
Slay Confidently Babes!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It was definitely a bumpy ride! I had zero knowledge of the beauty industry and I had no one to guide me or advice me on what steps to take. I tried messaging other PMU’s on Facebook but they never responded or they read my message but didn’t even bothered to give me any advice. I would post on a PMU Facebook group hoping for tips and still nothing. So, good old Google it was lol
The first thing I did was get my LLC and after that I got my EIN # after that I opened my business bank account! I was so happy because it meant I was a step closer to my goals!
I began to invest any little money I had into my business and signed up for more trainings because let’s be honest a 2 day, 3 day, or 5 day training is not enough to know EVERYTHING there is to Permanent Makeup. I had way to many why’s that one simple training couldn’t answer.
I took out a loan since I maxed out my CC paying for more courses and buying more inventory. I was stressing from all the debt and no clients! So, I joined a marketing group called Real Beauty Bosses who taught me everything there is to the beauty industry. I’m so happy I joined them because I now know what to do when I open my own salon. I am still working my 9-5 on days I don’t have clients. Working and building a business is hard and can be overwhelming but I’m making it work! I hope to go full time by April.
I had my eye on a suite by my house so I literally waited over a year to get it. Finally, in July 15, 2021 I moved in to the suite I wanted and the real journey began. Everything I did these last two years are falling into place in 2022 and I’ve been getting blessings after blessings since the year started. My work has finally paid off!!
No matter how bad a situation is there is ALWAYS good in every bad situation!
You just have to see it and keep working hard towards your goals with a winners mindset. <3
