Hidden Gems: Meet Victor Hughes of Uncle Boo’s Catering

Today we’d like to introduce you to Victor Hughes.

Hi Victor, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey with food began at a young age. I was always in the kitchen growing up, watching my mom, aunts, and granny cook. I loved observing their techniques and often found myself glued to cooking shows, dreaming of becoming a chef one day. As I grew older, my athletic abilities took center stage and that dream took a back seat during my adolescent years.

It wasn’t until I became an uncle and started cooking for my oldest nieces and nephews that I truly reconnected with the kitchen. Preparing meals for them reignited the love and passion I had for cooking all along. That’s where it all came full circle and how the name Uncle Boo was born. My nickname has always been Boo, and to my nieces and nephews, I’m simply Uncle Boo.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I wouldn’t describe it as a struggle in the sense that it’s been hard. The hardest part about cooking and really any calling is understanding that you can’t please or satisfy everyone.

When God calls you to do something, as believers we sometimes wrestle with the steps it takes to get there. God often gives us the vision of the end, and it’s usually big. But the starting point is right where you are, and then comes the middle which is the unknown. That part can feel like a struggle simply because you don’t know what you’ll go through to reach the end.

I’m in that unknown season right now, but I have God close to me. So to anyone reading this: take the step, trust the process, do the work, and allow yourself to be led by God.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Uncle Boo’s Catering?
Uncle Boo’s Catering is more than just a food service for private events, weddings, and celebrations it’s what I call a bridge-builder business. I don’t just show up with great food; I help connect people to what they need to make their event whole.

Over the years, I’ve partnered with trusted photographers, DJs, minister’s, musicians and other vendors because I believe in taking care of people beyond the plate. If a client needs something they haven’t thought of or haven’t booked yet I can point them to folks I know will treat them right.

My goal is to make the experience feel like being at your grandparents’ house “everything you need is already there, all you have to do is ask.”

I specialize in smoked meats and comfort food. While smoking is a big part of my craft, I also cook on the stove and enjoy blending those smoked flavors into dishes like smoked beef enchiladas and fajitas. It’s about taking familiar comfort food and giving it a deeper, more memorable taste.

What I’m most proud of is the feedback and support I’ve received from family and friends. It’s humbling to see people believe in your talent sometimes just as much, or even more, than you believe in yourself.

What matters most to you?
What matters most to me is being a good steward of this business. I truly believe God entrusted me with this vision, and because of that, staying connected to Him is essential for the business to grow into what it’s meant to be.

That also means I’m intentional about the work I take on. I don’t accept every opportunity that comes my way. If I feel led not to take a particular gig, I respectfully pass. For me, honoring the purpose behind the business is just as important as the success of it.

In the end God gets all the glory. For this is His business that He entrusted me to be a Steward over.
