Hidden Gems: Meet Vondajai Walker of Mo Matcha

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vondajai Walker.

Hi Vondajai, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Mo Matcha came out of a very real season in my life where I’m figuring out my next move. I’m currently a teacher, and I’m grateful for it, but I know it’s not my forever. I didn’t want to wait until I felt stuck or burnt out to start building something of my own, so I made the decision to move now and create something that gives me freedom, creativity, and ownership.

What’s crazy is I didn’t even like matcha at first. I tried it a few years ago and immediately was like “this tastes like grass”, I’m good. I was fully part of that group. But then I went to a church event where they were serving matcha, and it was actually good. That moment changed my whole perspective. I realized matcha isn’t the problem, it’s how it’s made. Then the real turning point happened during a snow and ice storm here in Dallas. Everything was shut down and I was craving a matcha. Starbucks was closed, so I went to the store, grabbed what I needed, and made it myself at home. I made one for my boyfriend too and he loved it.

After that, we went on a full matcha tour around Dallas, trying different spots, and that’s when it really clicked. What I made at home was actually better than a lot of what we were tasting. That’s when I knew I had something. At the same time, I had already been thinking about starting a matcha bar, but I didn’t have the money for a storefront. The overhead just wasn’t realistic. So instead of letting that stop me, I started paying attention to what was working around me. I kept seeing mobile coffee carts and trailers come across my timeline . And I thought okay… this is smart. But nobody was doing it in Dallas with matcha. That was my entry point.

So I decided to start a mobile matcha bar. Lower overhead, more flexibility, and I could go directly to where people already are. I can’t say I knew for sure it would work, but I knew I was going to give it everything I had. And if it didn’t work, I’d pivot. That’s just how I operate. Even the name Mo Matcha is intentional. “Mo” comes from how we talk in Black culture, through Ebonics, where “mo” means more. I would always say things like “I want some mo matcha” , and it just stuck. It felt natural, it felt like me, and it felt like the people I want to connect with.

So Mo Matcha isn’t just about a drink. It’s about creating a vibe, an experience, and something that feels culturally connected but still elevated. It started with me not even liking matcha, turned into me making my own, and now I’m building a whole business around it. And I’m just getting started.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been a completely smooth road. One of our biggest challenges has been building a loyal customer base that is willing to travel to us, whether we’re near or far. Unlike large chains like Starbucks that are consistently in the same, convenient locations, we operate as a mobile brand, so we rely heavily on customers intentionally coming out to support us.

Another challenge has been ensuring that the events we attend are actually profitable. With so many pop-up markets happening every week, not all of them bring in strong foot traffic. If a market doesn’t attract a solid crowd and our core customers don’t show up, it can result in low sales. Running a business at a loss isn’t sustainable, so we’ve had to become very strategic about which events we commit to.

Overall, these challenges have pushed us to be more intentional with our marketing, event selection, and customer engagement as we continue to grow Mo Matcha.

As you know, we’re big fans of Mo Matcha. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Mo Matcha is a Dallas-based mobile matcha bar that specializes in creating elevated, handcrafted matcha experiences. We don’t just serve drinks, we create moments. Every cup is made fresh to order using high-quality matcha and thoughtfully curated flavors that feel both unique and indulgent.

What sets us apart is our focus on experience and branding. From our signature pink and green aesthetic to our custom drink menu and luxury-style setup, we aim to bring a café-quality feel into every space we enter, whether that’s a private event, brand activation, or community pop-up. Our drinks are designed to be both visually appealing and memorable in taste, making them perfect for content, connection, and conversation.

We specialize in curated event experiences, working with brands, apartments, fitness studios, and organizations to create a matcha bar that feels intentional and on-brand. Instead of a standard vendor setup, we focus on creating an atmosphere that feels like a full activation.

What we’re most proud of is how Mo Matcha has grown into more than just a drink service. It’s a brand that people recognize, support, and want to be a part of. From our signature flavors like Strawberry Cloud and Ube Vanilla to our commitment to quality and presentation, we’ve built something that stands out in a crowded market.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
Some of the things that help me stay grounded and operate at my best are a mix of structure, self-care, and faith. I use QuickBooks to stay organized and keep my business finances in order. I also prioritize self-care, like maintaining a massage membership, which helps me reset and avoid burnout.

Most importantly, my faith is a huge part of my life. Spending time in prayer and reading the Bible keeps me centered, provides guidance, and helps me navigate both business and personal decisions with clarity and purpose.
