Today we’d like to introduce you to Alicia Azahar.
Hi Alicia, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My name is Alicia Azahar, I am an author, actress, poet, model, and teach a Social & Emotional Intervention class at The Phoenix Academy in Mansfield, TX. What got me started is having a deep desire to provide a platform for the voiceless. This transpired from finding my mother deceased at the age of eight and not knowing how to express my grief. It wasn’t until I received counseling and started expressing myself through pen and paper that I started the journey to my healing. A few years ago, I was invited by former principal Regenia Crane of The Phoenix Academy in Mansfield, TX, to perform a poem to motivate the students for the school year. After that day, she offered to have me come teach Social and Emotional Intervention classes to the DAEP students. Since I’m a writer, poet, and creative, I design classes that talks about all kinds of topics such as: bullying, self-esteem, anxiety, accountability, self-reflection, peer pressure, and more, but that also allows students to create their own stories, poems, and raps to express their perspective or experience on these topics.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road to get where I’m at today. Some of the challenges I have had to overcome are: people not knowing who I am, building my confidence enough to share my story and speak about my life experiences, getting in front of the right people and figuring out how I could use my life experiences in a creative way to build a platform to help people. I’m still challenged with not being able to get into many schools. It’s been difficult to show the importance of what I do or how these Social & Emotional Intervention classes could help their students. Most schools don’t just allow anyone to come in and some don’t necessarily feel comfortable with outside help. To a certain degree, I can understand, but I was raised on the “it takes a village” mentality. Sometimes it takes someone on the outside to reach those on the inside.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Uninterrupted Thoughts?
My business, Uninterrupted Thoughts, is a multilayered entity that covers public speaking, emotional coaching, Social & Emotional Intervention classes, teaching creative writing workshops, journaling, Spoken word, and mentoring youth. What sets me apart from others is the ability to cover a broader spectrum in the communications field due to creative writing. I don’t just offer courses that help you on a social and emotional level; I also teach people how to properly communicate on a work level. Communication is used in everything we do, and not being able to know how to do it effectively has impacted so many people. I want to help bridge that gap!
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson I have learned about this journey is to never give up and to use rejection as your fuel. There is always a bigger picture to everything that we do, and sometimes we get so caught up in the small details or issues that we lose sight on our “why” of what we do. Always remember your “why,” and you will never allow anything to stop you again!
