Inspiring Conversations with Brandy Derrick of Legal Ease Bookkeeping

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandy Derrick.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My bookkeeping journey started back in 2001 when I began working for my dad, helping with his business’s books. What started as a part-time role quickly became a passion — I loved bringing order to the numbers and helping my Dad understand his financial picture.

Years later, I wanted the flexibility to work remotely, and I came across a blog post about Bookkeeper Launch, a program that teaches people how to start a virtual bookkeeping business. That discovery changed everything. I realized I could combine my bookkeeping skills with my entrepreneurial spirit and build something of my own.

In 2016, I founded Legal Ease Bookkeeping, specializing exclusively in law firms. What began as just me at my home has grown into a national firm serving over 150 clients across 30 states. We’ve been recognized as one of the Top 50 Bookkeeping Firms two years in a row, and I have been recognized as a Top ProAdvisor.

Today, I’m focused on scaling my business, embracing new technologies like AI, and building a team that delivers excellence to our clients while allowing me to step more into sales, marketing, and strategy…the parts of entrepreneurship that truly inspire me.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. A little over a year ago, one of my employees in a leadership position decided to leave the company. What I didn’t expect was for her to reach out to the clients she managed and ask them to leave with her…even though she had signed a non-solicitation agreement. It was devastating. I had poured so much of myself into building the business, and in that moment, I questioned whether I even wanted to keep going.

But that experience became a turning point. I realized that while I can’t control every situation, I can control how I respond. I rebuilt stronger systems, refined my hiring process, and focused on creating a team that truly aligns with our values. In hindsight, it forced me to grow as a leader…to protect what I’ve built while trusting that setbacks can lead to even greater success.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Legal Ease Bookkeeping?
My company, Legal Ease Bookkeeping, provides specialized bookkeeping services exclusively for law firms across the United States. We help attorneys stay compliant with bar association rules, especially when it comes to managing client trust (IOLTA) accounts, and we also handle the essential day-to-day financial tasks like invoicing and payroll.

What sets us apart is our deep expertise in the legal industry. We don’t just “do the books,” we understand the ethical and regulatory requirements that make law firm accounting unique. Our systems are built for accuracy, security, and efficiency, allowing our clients to focus on practicing law while we manage their finances with precision and care.

We’re known for combining technical excellence with process-driven consistency. Every task has a documented workflow, and our team uses top-tier tools to ensure accuracy, security, and fast turnaround times.

Brand-wise, I’m most proud that Legal Ease Bookkeeping has been recognized as one of the Top 50 Bookkeeping Firms for two years in a row. But even more meaningful is the trust we’ve built with over 150 law firms across 30 states.

At its core, our brand represents peace of mind. We give law firm owners clarity, compliance, and confidence, so they can make better business decisions and sleep well at night knowing their books, invoices, and payroll are in expert hands.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is that growth requires letting go. In the beginning, I thought being a good business owner meant doing everything myself: managing clients, overseeing every detail, and making sure nothing slipped through the cracks. But as the company grew, I realized that holding on too tightly was actually holding us back.

Learning to delegate, trust my team, and focus on the bigger picture has been transformative. It hasn’t always been easy, especially after facing challenges like losing a key employee, but it’s taught me that strong systems and strong people are what truly sustain a business.

Today, I see leadership as empowering others to succeed. When I step back and let my team shine, the business grows in ways I could never have achieved alone.
