Inspiring Conversations with Britton Bahador of Bahador Behavioral Health, PLLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Britton Bahador

Hi Britton, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story starts with a strong calling and internal compassion to help those in need of care, especially those in underserved populations and in poverty. While I grew up lucky enough to have financial support- I was exposed and witnessed poverty around me and the limitations and emotional toll that takes on people mentally. On a family vacation when I was very young (maybe 8) I witnessed a mom and her three young kids begging for money and food and I knew then that my calling was to help others less fortunate. I experienced some self-inflicted hardships in my teenage years and finally at 21, with support, I picked myself back up. I decided to start college and my goals were to become a social worker and work for CPS. I received my masters in social work and worked in admissions for different non profits advocating for those needing treatment and resources. I have always loved to learn and decided I could help more people if I had the ability to counsel them as well as prescribe medication for mental health needs that tangible resources alone could not help solve the underlying problems people face. Anxiety and feeling “different” is a huge part of my story. I continued working as a director of a psychiatric facility in a low income area of Dallas and had my son (he’s now 8). I worked and put myself through nursing school until I obtained my board certification in Psychiatry. I worked as a nurse practitioner for several outpatient clinics, inpatient hospitals, and with veterans. My goal through out this process was to absorb, learn the obstacles that patients experience facing mental health care with intention to open my own private practice and solve these obstacles. I have had a team of mentors & a small group of friends who I put in place and who have guided and supported and help achieve my goals. I opened my private practice 5 months ago and have grown tremendously because of the values that I uphold when working with clients- compassionate, personalized, loving, supportive care. I don’t believe in “time off,” as mental health crisis can happen 24/7. My son is a huge motivating factor in the hard work I produce and he is well taken care of emotionally, physically, and mentally and I strive to show him the importance of helping those less fortunate. When I opened my business, and everything I do going forward in my business is a representation of me- from the website design and colors, to the way I market, and the care I provide clients and their families. I never say no to helping someone regardless their age, gender, financial situation. If I can’t help to the best of my ability I will support them in finding someone who meets their needs. In the future I plan on expanding my practice and helping lead and manage others. I enjoy management, encouraging others to meet their potential and reach their goals, as well as hosting and bringing people together for the greater good.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I believe that any one who is successful puts in hard work and faces obstacles. The important part is the mentality of the person and how they handle obstacles. I had my child and four months later went through a divorce, got in nursing school, worked a couple different jobs. I also lost someone very close to me at this time. Is having a newborn while working and in school full time an obstacle? Yes, but where there is a will, there’s a way. I also had some obstacles getting into nursing school but I never gave up- I tell any one who will listen, “you can do anything if you want it enough.” I believe this 100 percent.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Bahador Behavioral Health offers virtual psychiatric services including talk therapy and medication management. I am a board certified psychiatric nurse practitioner as well as a masters level social worker. My business is built on 24 hour compassionate care to every one I serve. I offer same to next day appointments, personal access to reach me via phone or email 24 hours a day and I treat every person with compassion, dignity, and respect. I have experience with alcohol and drug addiction and have worked in various treatment centers with a variety of patients from funded to non funded. I offer lower rates to those who cannot afford help. I also offer documentation for service animals, veteran claims, and ADA accommodations when people need it.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Be kind and respectful to every one. Help those who can never repay you or help you. When you work in mental health there is never a power struggle or proving yourself right to a client. We meet the client where they are and find solutions, not make problems.
