Today we’d like to introduce you to Chelsea Mason.
Hi Chelsea, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In 2019, I reached a career crossroads and decided to take a leap that changed everything. I quit my full-time sales job because it wasn’t the best fit for my personality or mental health. This decision led to a series of rapid changes and new opportunities. For over five years, I had been considering going back to school to finish my bachelor’s degree, and now was the time to make that leap. I found a part-time job that fit around my full-time classes, moved home to save money, and had the bold idea to start a business. If I was overhauling my life, why not add one more venture?
I grew up in a small town about 45 minutes from Fort Worth and always told my family I wanted to own a wedding and event venue someday. In 2019, as I considered starting a business, I knew it had to be wedding-adjacent. It seemed like the perfect time to work with brides, bridal parties, and other wedding vendors as a trial run in the wedding industry. Fortunately, I had several small business owners in my network who guided me through the process of establishing, opening, and running a small business. Globox Tan officially became an LLC in August 2019, funded by my savings.
Throughout the year, I battled imposter syndrome as I reached out to wedding photographers, planners, venues, as well as hair and makeup artists. Despite my sales experience, I hadn’t yet learned that “no” isn’t personal. The pandemic shutdown prompted me to use the time wisely and connect with as many people as possible. I sent over 1,000 messages via Instagram and email, offering a tan in exchange for feedback and a review. By the end of 2020, my business began to gain traction, and people started reaching out to me for services and advice on sunless tanning. Every year since starting my business, I take a new sunless tanning educational course to stay updated with the latest techniques and products.
Globox Tan started as a mobile airbrush tanning service in DFW, Texas. In 2021, I added teeth whitening to my services and developed a line of self-tanning products that can be purchased and shipped anywhere in the United States. This year, I plan to expand my product line with at least four new products.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Owning a business is anything but easy. Starting one requires a level of tenacity that can almost be mistaken for delusion. Despite having enough savings to get started, I didn’t have a lot of working capital in the beginning. I aimed to grow my business slowly and steadily, but even then, it demanded a significant amount of time and energy.
Like any small owner, it took some time to truly build my confidence, but that came with time and practice. I worried a lot on the beginning that even if I knew what I was doing, there would be people who didn’t believe in me or like me.
I made a few poor investments early on by partnering with social media management companies and influencers. These decisions cost me money, but they also taught me invaluable lessons. I am continually working to improve my knowledge of marketing and social media management.
Over the past five years, I’ve learned a great deal and constantly challenge myself to build on my current knowledge. However, I recognize that I will never fully master tanning or running a small business. My business is undoubtedly a work in progress.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Globox Tan offers mobile tanning and teeth whitening services in the greater Fort Worth, Texas metro area, with a primary focus on brides and wedding parties. I am known for my attention to detail, the unrushed nature of my services, my commitment to educating every client, and my genuine care for their well-being.
Globox Tan also features a line of at-home tanning products that ship nationwide to all 50 states. This meticulously formulated product line is among the highest quality on the market. Currently, we offer three products, with plans to launch at least four more this year.
I am proud to have built a brand that encourages clients and customers to love and protect their skin. One of the reasons I started this business was the high prevalence of skin cancer diagnoses in the United States. Through Globox, I aim to raise awareness about the risks of skin cancer and emphasize the importance of annual full-body scans by a dermatologist.
This brand is not just about beauty; it’s about loving and protecting your skin. Our products not only enhance your appearance but also boost your confidence and help you stand a little taller.
What were you like growing up?
As a child, I was outgoing, outspoken, and assertive. I never met a stranger and never backed down from a challenge. I am grateful that my parents embraced my big personality, as I never grew out of it. Guided by a strong moral compass, most of my decisions were based on a clear sense of right and wrong.
Growing up in a small town, I was involved in everything. I started karate, gymnastics, and barrel racing at a young age and continued for many years, eventually adding basketball to my activities. By middle school, I had also taken up volleyball and track.
I loved working on group projects, so in middle school, I joined the student council and the National Junior Honor Society. Despite being busy with numerous extracurricular activities, I maintained a high grade point average throughout middle and high school.
