Today we’d like to introduce you to Chioma Moronu.
Hi Chioma, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers
Hi, I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker living in Fort Worth, TX. I am a first generation immigrant from a biracial and multicultural family. I was born in Nigeria to my Nigerian father and Malaysian mother. I moved to Indonesia around my second birthday where I lived till I was 10. I have lived in Fort Worth ever since. I started my clinical journey while attending TCU for my undergraduate degree in Social Work. After graduation, I began my graduate program at the University of Texas at Arlington where I earned my Master’s in Social Work. During this time, I began providing group and family therapy in a partial hospitalization setting. From there, I started my work in a community-based setting providing skills training to kids and their families. After a few months, I was promoted to Assistant Director and then eventually to Program Director.
During my time at these agencies, I gained insight into the profound impact trauma has on our minds and body. It really shaped my passion in learning as much as possible about the experiences we have as kids and how it impacts who we become as adults. This then resulted in me looking back into my own lived experience as a mixed-race person.
With the racial turmoil the country currently faces, I saw an increase in uncertainty within the biracial and mixed community. Although the feeling of not belonging has always been prevalent within this community, the increased divide made the struggle a little more apparent. This is what led me to begin my private practice. After five years of being the Program Director, I decided to step away and pursue my passion of helping others embrace themselves fully. Learning how to reconnect their mind, body, and soul. Specifically focusing on helping those from biracial and multicultural backgrounds learn how to navigate in a society focused on race.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I can’t say that it has been a smooth road but I have had a lot of support along the way.
Pursuing my degrees while working full time, participating in an internship, and raising two little ones wasn’t easy but I was able to succeed with the support of my family and friends. The transition from full-time employee to full-time self-employed has been an adventure. It has created an amazing network of people around me and I have been so grateful for all those I have met since beginning this journey.
As you know, we’re big fans of Social Soul Therapy PLLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Social Soul Therapy was created with the idea to help others reconnect to themselves fully and learn to embrace their whole selves. Using a variety of tools to help others reconnect mind, body and soul. I specialize in working with mixed raced and multicultural individuals. I have experience working with anxiety, depression, trauma, racial trauma, identity formation, and life transitions. Knowing that trauma and feelings are held within the body, I utilize a holistic approach.
As both a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Registered Yoga Teacher, I am able to merge my two passions into a framework that can help guide people into a space of self-love and acceptance. I offer a judgment-free zone allow people to be their full authentic self. I provide virtual therapy and coaching, yoga classes and am a public speaker. I am able to speak on biracial and multicultural identity formation, Trauma, Racial trauma, self-love, and self-care.
