Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Durham.
Hi Courtney, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Skincare has been a huge part of my life for years as I’ve struggled with acne since adolescence. I’ve tried countless products and went to many dermatologists who prescribed antibiotics, harsh cleansers, and ointments. I also tried the birth control route, but nothing worked or lasted. Acne was devastating to my self-confidence and quality of life from adolescence through adulthood. I found myself at times not going to events or just not wanting to leave home because of my skin. When we had to wear masks during the pandemic, I would gladly put on a mask just to cover the acne breakouts on my face. Throughout the years I researched products and ingredients, trying to figure out what would work and creating my own skin regimen. I also tried the home remedies from my family; like putting toothpaste on a pimple (y’all, please don’t do this, lol). It wasn’t until 2021 I found an esthetician who specialized in acne. Her method, along with my dedication and discipline, got my skin clear, gave me confidence, and improved my quality of life immensely. This gave me a newfound joy for performing what became a sacred ritual I was thankful to do daily. My own skin struggles, along with the esthetician who is now my mentor, inspired me to want to help others with their skin. I wanted to provide a service that would change lives. I find it even more rewarding that I can show clients pictures of my own progress, which gives them hope that things will get better.
January 2023, I stopped travel nursing and came back home with the goal of completing Esthetician school and starting Skin Rituals. I started school in April while working full-time as a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit Registered Nurse, where I still work today. While in school, I started an Instagram page for Skin Rituals so people could go with me on my journey through school. I also did a lot of business research and asked my esthetics instructor questions about the business side so I could slowly start getting things in order. I graduated October 2023 and decided to do a soft opening January 1, 2024. I’m currently going through an intense training and doing case studies to treat acne clients with my mentor, and it’s so rewarding and fun. I will be doing a grand opening at a new location soon, and I can’t wait!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I feel like the road has been fairly smooth in becoming an entrepreneur. I am very new and just starting, but I prayed about this for a long time, and I’m thankful for how things have gone thus far. I have friends and family who have started businesses, so I’ve seen/heard the struggles. When I started Skin Rituals I knew it would be hard work, but I’ve enjoyed the growing process. As a friend reminds me, I have to acknowledge the small wins.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about Skin Rituals?
When my clients come to Skin Rituals, my goal is to curate a luxury experience that is necessary and entices their senses. This experience is provided through gentle touch, relaxing music, and the beautiful aromas they smell. The foundation to a Skin Rituals’ facial treatment is a comprehensive holistic/chemical approach to people of all ages and skin types. I incorporate modalities and techniques to reinvigorate, nourish, soothe, and hydrate the skin. Each facial treatment is customized according to what their skin needs most and the desired results we work together to achieve while also promoting their skin’s natural ability to heal. I absolutely love being an Esthetician specializing in luxury corrective facial treatments for acne and anti-aging. It’s a joy to provide a safe space for people to feel relaxed and help them feel confident in their skin. I am most proud of how fast my brand has grown since opening January 1. Dallas has shown me so much love, and I’m very grateful. I know I have a lot more work and growing to do, but I’m dedicated to keeping a business of integrity and giving my best to every client.
