Inspiring Conversations with Cynarra Pittman of Birth Perceptions

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cynarra Pittman.

Hi Cynarra, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am a local Doula and Student Midwife. I received my certification through BEST Doula Training and became a certified Doula in June 2019. In August 2019, I became a Placenta Encapsulator with the same facilitator. I’ve always wanted to be a Doula I knew this was my calling when things started becoming assessable to me. Facebook and Google are always listening, time, money, and training resources. It couldn’t have come at a better time, Covid became a part of our lives and women were looking for other options outside of hospitals and support in general to navigate hospital policies and birthing options. I realized that birth was only one part. I’m currently completing my Sex Doula certification with the Atlanta Institute of Tantra and Divine Sexuality. I’ll be able to help women and couples talk openly about sex, help resolve sexual traumas and explore sex with conscious love, touch, wellness, and sexuality. I also offer belly binding, reiki and yoni steaming. I want to give womb men and families more than just birthing guidance.

I believe the purpose of birth work starts with passion and empathy. Just like the Biblical Midwives Shifrah and Puah that started a chain of events when they saved baby Moses, I too want to follow in their footsteps. I am passionate about birth and I want to create a space of inclusion for all races, religions, gender pronouns, and sexual orientations to ensure that birthing persons have a healthy, safe, and complete nurturing experience; pre-labor, labor, delivery, and postpartum. My goal is to understand each unique story – including their birth visions, hopes, dreams, expectations, and fears. I want to focus on helping women and showing them that they have control over their bodies. I want to let them know that they can give birth with dignity and respect. I finished my first year with 12 healthy births and 9 placentas.

I felt even more intertwined in the birth community and wanted to do more and offer more. I started searching for options on midwifery certification routes. Becoming a CPM seemed best for me and connected with my future midwife plans. I enrolled with the Association of Texas Midwifes in January of 2021. I’m currently interning as a Student Midwife at Origins Birth Center- Dallas. I’m very happy to be on this journey in the midst of everything good and bad in the maternal birth world.

Becoming a Midwife will allow me to support families looking for alternatives to birthing and I am passionate about being that option for them. Women’s perceptions about birth are influential.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been a smooth road, more anxiety than anything. Looking for a preceptor was overwhelming. Finding a midwife with preceptor qualifications or midwifes accepting students. The CPM program is 2 years and many already had students they were working with. I am so happy I came across my preceptor Jennifer Crawford. Like the phase. “What is meant to be yours will always find its way”. I stopped worrying and rushing and things fell into place.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Birth Perceptions?
I’m a traveling doula. I love traveling, 6 states so far and Mexico. I’m known for placenta gift boxes. I make placenta chocolates and body butter. Nothing goes to waste. Pills get boring and chocolate is delicious and who doesn’t want to feel silky smooth with my herbal placenta body butter. I also use the placenta to make hair oil.

As a doula/future midwife,/; I’m passionate about birth and I want to create a space of inclusion for all races, religions, gender pronouns, and sexual orientations to ensure that birthing persons have a healthy, safe, nurturing experience leading up to and during labor, birth and postpartum. My goal is to understand each unique story including their birth vision, hopes, dreams, expectations, and fears. Helping women and showing them, that they have control over their bodies and can give birth with dignity and respect is my Birth Perception for all birthing persons. A doula is a trained professional who offers guidance and provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to families before, during, and shortly after childbirth. A doula has many roles, including advocating for you, encouraging and helping you fulfill specific desires you might have for your birth, maintaining your birth plan, and keeping you informed and supported if unexpected changes to your birth plan should arise. As your doula, I provide you with individual support during labor and delivery from start to finish with comfort measures and pain relief techniques that include breathing, relaxation, massage, and laboring positions. I also work with your partner, reassuring them and guiding them in the ways they can comfort you.

As doulas, we are taught to “meet the mother where she is.” From hospital to home birth, cesarean to vaginal, I want to meet you where you are and provide you with resources and information to make educated choices for your best birth. It’s your story, your experience, your memory. Your Birth, Your Perceptions. As your birth doula, I would be honored to help you and your partner be your best advocates for your own birth!
