Inspiring Conversations with Daphney Poyser of Fern Connections

Today we’d like to introduce you to Daphney Poyser.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I became a widow in early 2019 and since my life was changing anyway, I decided that it would be a good time to make some of my own personal changes, so I left Corporate America in January 2020 to never look back. I took some time off to let the dust settle then started to focus on who I am and what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. That’s when I started attending these lockdown live sessions on LinkedIn and hearing other people talk about their careers and that’s when I learned more about matchmaking and the matchmaking institute, I enrolled shortly after and that’s truly where this journey began. I didn’t know at the time that it would lead me back to the LGBTQ+ community but it doesn’t surprise me since I have been an ally for most of my life and some of my dearest friends have been part of this community.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
To say the least, I started my business during a pandemic and no one knew what to expect, not to mention I am a middle-aged black woman living in the south who owns a matchmaking, date and relationship coaching business that focuses on the LGBTQIA+ community across the country. Not everyone cares for what I do and I get hate messages on social media all of the time but that shit isn’t going to stop me from doing something that’s very important to me as a mom and an aunt of queer people.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Fern Connections?
I own Fern Connections, which is an LGBTQIA+ and Ally-focused matchmaking, date, and relationship coaching company located in the Dallas area and services people nationwide. I pride myself on being the most inclusive that I can be in wanting to work with people of all queerness and straightness. It doesn’t matter how you identify, what your sexual orientation is or the color of your skin, you’re upbringing, etc. What matters is that you have a desire to find love and a meaningful relationship. And that you understand that there is no magic in what I do, it’s all practical tool-based processes that helps me to be able to help you and many others like you across the country to find what you are looking for in your next person, partner, significant other, husband or wife, whatever you call the love of your life.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
The first time I met a drag queen, he was absolutely beautiful and all dressed up in a stark white wedding dress up against his very chocolate skin. I was so blown away by his beauty that I had to meet him and we later became good friends.
