Hi DeCoya, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In the beginning of 2020, I was your average high school senior trying to graduate and get accepted into college. We then encountered COVID-19, it presented unprecedented issues that we as a nation had never faced. One thing I had never faces was being financial instability. My mother and I were laid off work. I begin to think of ways I could possibly pivot and make money due to seeing the hardship it put on my mom. My mother is a single mother of three children and has always been the breadwinner. To see my mother stressed about finances was new to me and sparked a desire to help. My mother has always taught me the importance of entrepreneurship. I begin to think about my interests and passions.
This helped me to see what I could do to make sure I could help provide for my household, all while trying to maintain an high GPA and remain at the top of my class. Once I completed the research and wrote a business plan, I went to my mom and told her my plan. My mom then proceeded to invest and assist me in starting my business. She made sure it was something I really wanted to do. My mom helped me through everything from start to finish, she taught me all the knowledge when it came down to being an entrepreneur, which is not for the weak. I choose to do my business based on cosmetics. False eyelashes are in popular demand with my generation. Individuals, especially woman, invest in their physical appearance. I came to college and started advertising my business to my peers since college is a broad environment and I know a lot of people wear eyelashes. While studying and building my brand, I was able to maintain a 4.0 GPA and be named to Chancellor’s List. I am where I’m at today because of the love and support of my mom and the encouragement from my friends.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a business was not easy at all. It was very difficult, there were even nights I had to cry sometimes. Some of the struggles I went through was resisting not giving up because things weren’t going the way I wanted it to or being stressed due to how expensive it was. Having a business is very stressful because it will be times where you probably won’t get any sales, your website isn’t how you want it, the customer support might be bad but that’s why you keep pushing no matter what come to you that try to tear you down. Having faith, support and being passionate about your business is very important because it pushes you to try harder and do better. It provides motivation on the days when you want to quit.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
I have learned many important lessons due to COVID-19. My top 4 are as follows: 1. Time is SO PRECIOUS and never take it for granted. Time is the one thing you can never replace. 2. Appreciate and love the individuals that are important to you. They can be here today and gone tomorrow without any warning. 3. Anything worth having is worth working hard for. Nothing in life worth having comes easy. 4. I have also learned the importance of entrepreneurship and being able to tap into other talents.
