Inspiring Conversations with Dee Main of Gentle Canines

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dee Main.

Hi Dee, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve been in business 32 years as of this year. I got started when I rescued 13 pit bulls- 2 adults and 11 puppies. When I called my local shelter, I was told they would have to put them down if I surrendered them to the shelter because they were pits. The lady got me in contact with a rescue who agreed to help place them all as long as I would foster them until they could be placed. Their one requirement was that they had to get their good citizenship award before placement. I taught them all I knew in a week and took them to the trainer. The trainer was so impressed with what I had already taught them, he gave me a list of commands and told me I didn’t need his help, I was a natural dog trainer. The rest is history.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
No. Just like in any business, there are growing pains. You will always have critics who do not agree with your business practices or procedures. Staying true to your core beliefs and your customers is what has to drive you.

We’ve been impressed with Gentle Canines, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I do in-home training so owners can learn alongside their pups. As a dog trainer, I can get a dog to do anything I want them to do. The trick is to get them to obey their owners and that is why owner involvement sets my business apart from other training programs. I specialize in keeping pups with their families. When an owner is frustrated with their pup’s behavior, I am the one they call as a last resort. I’m proud to say I have helped thousands of owners with their pets.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
Doodle Dandy Rescue, Mini Mutts Rescue, Tzu Zoo Rescue, DASH, NTASR, Collin County Animal Shelter, and many more rescues have played a large role in my success as a trainer and as a business owner. I love the work I do with the rescues I work with. So many of my clients have ended up being not only my friends but part of my family that I cannot thank all of them by name. I love all of my clients and all of my rescues!
