Inspiring Conversations with Donny Richmond of The Simple Cafe

Today we’d like to introduce you to Donny Richmond.

Hi Donny, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I have always loved to cook, and since I’ve been 17, I wanted a cafe. My life took a lot of wrong turns by my choices then I landed with the railroad I had a great career with railroading then more choices changed my career again. I never let go of my dream, just never thought it would actually happen. Feb 2022, I went to a men’s retreat and shared that I had always wanted a cafe. Three weeks later, a friend called me and turned me on to a cafe being sold on the historic Waxahachie town square. My wife pushed me to do it, so we bought and here we are. Neither of us has ever worked in a restaurant industry

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s been a huge learning curve. I know how to cook but had no idea about all the business aspects of a cafe

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about The Simple Cafe “the worst we have is delicious”?
We are a small cafe that serves home/country cooking, but we are becoming famous for our cinnamon rolls. Our chicken fried steaks are one of the best you will ever have along with our burgers. On Tuesdays, we do brisket tacos from the briskets I smoke. They are a huge favorite

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up.
Prolly growing up in a very small town and we lived in a small house, but there was a neighborhood full of kids. Phillips 66 owned all the houses there, and the employees rented them. We had a big field to play in and ride motorcycles

Pricing:

  • Cinnamon rolls with a glaze that is to die for $.6.99
