Inspiring Conversations with Dr. Heather Hahn of Hahn Counseling Services

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Heather Hahn.

Dr. Hahn, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My love for the counseling profession began in the 4th grade after experiencing a family tragedy. Since then, I have felt a calling to serve others who are experiencing hardship, pain, and/or suffering. I took my first introduction to psychology course when I was a junior in high school through the dual credit program. This experience further solidified my interest in the profession and my dedication to learning the field has been unwavering since. I completed my Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Psychology, obtained a Master of Education (MEd) degree in Counseling and Human Development, and completed my studies by earning a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Counselor Education and Supervision. In order to become a fully licensed mental health counselor (Licensed Professional Counselor [LPC]), you must do more than obtain the educational experience and are required to complete experiential learning via practicums, internships, and then the required 3000 post-graduate hours in the field as an associate-level counselor (it was called an LPC-Intern when I was going through the process). It was during these times that I gained invaluable skills in field working with a wide variety of diagnoses/dual diagnoses in varying settings (outpatient, inpatient, and residential). Since becoming fully licensed, I’ve also become a board-approved supervisor for other LPC-Associates, specialized in treating trauma/complex trauma, as well as earned my Trauma-Informed Yoga Therapy certificate to integrate these techniques into sessions, if desired. After completing my Ph.D., I worked at the University level teaching graduate-level counseling students. It was during this time that I realized I missed my passion to work client-facing with individuals and co-opened a private practice in 2016. In 2021 I decided I wanted to open my own private practice, therefore leaving my position as co-owner of the practice I was currently in and set out to open Hahn Counseling Services which fully opened in January 2022.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The journey to opening Hahn Counseling Services has been pretty smooth and extremely fulfilling. The hardest part to navigate was establishing a website and becoming paneled with insurance. Based off previous experience having co-founded another private practice in 2016, I knew it was imperative that I surround myself with knowledgeable individuals who could help me navigate the nuances of these processes. Therefore, I hired Indian Hills Marketing and Design to help develop my website and create my logo based off my visions for my practice, as well as found an agency (DENmaar Inc.) to help ensure I was paneled with insurance in a timely fashion.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Hahn Counseling Services, PLLC?
Hahn Counseling Services, PLLC was established in late 2021 and opened in January 2022. The concept of Hahn Counseling Services is being able to fully understand each individual is on a unique journey in life and the significance of this transformative process while working towards healing. Because of this concept, the logo for Hahn Counseling Services is a butterfly to showcase this unique process and journey. For instance, during the counseling experience, an individual may feel as if they cannot go on any longer in making the necessary changes for the betterment of their life; however, just like a caterpillar that cocoons and blossoms into a beautiful butterfly, each person has the ability to continue to transform while under pressure and hardship.

At Hahn Counseling Services, you can expect Dr. Heather Hahn to create a safe space for you to begin your healing journey and share of your story. She believes in the importance of the healing/relational connection and does not take it lightly that each person who comes in trusts her to join them on their journey. Dr. Hahn fully understands this is your journey, your story, your life and respects the place the client is currently at without judgment or trying to change who they are. Simultaneously, a client can expect for Dr. Hahn to point out discrepancies to help each person reach their identified counseling goals.

Dr. Hahn is a holistic counselor that believes in the mind/body connection and treating the whole client. While she specializes in trauma/complex trauma, she also has extensive experience working with chronic stress/stress management, anxiety, depression, work/life balance, PTSD, individual identity, family conflict, blended families, divorce, grief and loss, personality disorders, and addictions/recovery protection. She works with children, adolescents, and adults and provides individual, relational, and family counseling services.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
The best advice I’d have for those seeking to begin a private practice is to believe in yourself. Trust, you have the knowledge — and, if you don’t, take continuing education courses to continue to obtain experience and knowledge. Second, I’d say to never stop learning. This field is ever-shifting and changing and it’s important to grow with the profession to best serve the clients coming in to see you. Finally, I’d recommend having a support system behind you and to remember to not only network but feel confident in seeking support and help from others around you to help your practice come to fruition.
