Today we’d like to introduce you to Evan Lossing.
Hi Evan, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My name is Evan Lossing, and I am the new owner-operator of Mathnasium of Coit Campbell! I am very excited to be in the Richardson area and to help our Richardson students succeed on their math learning journey.
My family and I have been a part of Mathnasium for 10 years, and in our time here, have seen many students’ understanding and attitude towards math improve considerably. I started instructing with Mathnasium when I was only 16 years old and was in absolute awe at the strategies and different techniques utilized by the students at our learning center. I remember being envious of how quickly the students were able to decompose difficult problems and make them so simple! I actually had a few of the students teach me something new by the end of my first week! From those first moments, I knew Mathnasium was something I wanted to share with others.
Our goal at our learning center is to change lives through math and to make math make sense to each student. We understand that no two students understand or learn in exactly the same way. We pride ourselves on creating a stress-free and individualized learning experience for each of our students, regardless of where they are starting concept-wise. Mathnasium really is a fresh, fun, and engaging way for your student to master math.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
When the pandemic first started, there were a lot of things on my mind. How do we best serve our staff and families? How do we continue to create an engaging and interactive learning experience with students learning from home? At the start, there was definitely a learning curve. The technology, the updated safety and cleaning policies, new instruction techniques, etc.
The most difficult part of the pandemic was hearing about the students struggling with the transition of in-person learning to virtual learning. The switch, although was critical for student health and safety, did leave many students feeling confused and lost in their studies. Many students had faced, what many education experts have called, the COVID slide.
With our Mathnasium @Home program, we were able to continue serving our students and families safely online. We were able to help students master new concepts as they were being introduced in school, provide homework support, and help alleviate the stress brought on by the sudden shift to virtual learning.
With in-person learning resuming this school year, we were excited to see many familiar, as well as some new faces join us for in-center learning. Our goal is to help students combat the COVID slide, and continue to grow in their concepts and overall enjoyment of math.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Mathnasium of Coit Campbell?
Mathnasium is an all-in-one math learning center geared to help students, Kindergarten through 12th grade, catch up, keep up, and get ahead in their math concepts!
Our main focus at Mathnasium is to teach math in a way that makes sense for each of our students. We understand that no two students learn and understand math the same way. We believe by helping students understand the “why” of a problem or method, rather than just the “what”, allows them to better understand the strategies and math as a whole. With understanding comes mastery, and with mastery comes scalability. As students master these new concepts, they will learn more applications and adaptations of their skills.
At our learning center, we strive to create a stress-free, positive, and individualized learning experience for each of our students. Our students are always warmly greeted by name and are assisted by our friendly and engaging team of math instructors.
What makes you happy?
My favorite part about what we do is really connect with our students, and help them develop confidence in themselves.
When I was a student in school, I was always nervous to raise my hand in class and ask questions. When we learned new things, I wasn’t confident in my skills and would constantly second-guess my answers. The lack of confidence I had would always add unwanted stress.
When I started teaching, I made a vow to myself that I would do everything in my power to give students an environment where they felt heard and supported. Students are always able to come to us with questions and concerns. We are always patient, and put ourselves in our student’s shoes.
Knowing that students have this supportive environment and that I can help alleviate that unwanted stress is my reason for teaching and happiness.
