Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacob Millican.
Jacob, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My interest in finance started early through my grandfather, who was a postman and ran a small cattle operation. He taught me patience, discipline, and the importance of thinking long term—ideas that shaped how I see money and risk.
After working in traditional financial roles, I started to see how often the system pushes people into models and products that don’t really fit their lives or decisions. That realization led me to start my own practice so I could work more thoughtfully and independently. I’m still building, learning, and refining, but the foundation has stayed the same: stay disciplined, think long term, and keep things grounded in real life.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road.
Starting out on my own meant giving up stability and predictability. There were long stretches early on where progress felt slow, income was uncertain, and every decision—big or small—fell on me. Without a built-in brand or infrastructure, I had to build everything from scratch while learning in real time.
Another ongoing challenge has been resisting the pressure to grow or operate in ways that don’t align with how I think financial advice should work. It’s easy to default to industry norms or shortcuts, especially early on, but staying disciplined about building something thoughtful and sustainable has required patience.
Most of the challenges haven’t been dramatic moment. It’s been the quiet ones: uncertainty, long timelines, and the need to stay consistent even when progress isn’t obvious. Those experiences shaped how I work today and reinforced the importance of thinking long term.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
My firm is called 9M Investments, named after my grandfather’s cattle brand. The name reflects the long-term, disciplined approach the firm was built on.
9M Investments is an independent financial planning and investment advisory practice. I work with a smaller group of clients and focus on building plans and portfolios that reflect their actual goals, risk tolerance, and real-life decisions, rather than using standardized models.
What sets the firm apart is the emphasis on clarity and independence. A lot of time is spent slowing decisions down, talking through tradeoffs, and helping clients understand why certain choices are being made. The goal isn’t to chase performance or trends, but to stay consistent and thoughtful over time.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud that the firm has grown intentionally. It’s built around trust, long-term relationships, and doing the work carefully rather than quickly.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I’d just add that I still see this as a work in progress. I’m continuing to learn, adjust, and refine as I go, and I’ve found that staying patient and curious tends to matter more than having everything figured out.
